An Oconto-based children’s book author will debut her two new books at a launch party Sunday.

Annie Frances will read excerpts and sign books from 3-5 p.m. Aug. 23 at The Sim Links, 908 Main St., Oconto.

The beach and grassy area at Shawano Lake County Park was filled with people Aug. 13 as the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department held one of its Lunch in the Park programs. Besides grilling burgers and hot dogs, law enforcement officers interacted with people and even played some games.

Shawano-area children were pouring lemonade and selling cookies and other sweet streets Aug. 13 at a stand set up on South Andrews Street. The lemonade stand was set up to raise money to purchase school supplies for Hillcrest Primary School and Olga Brener Intermediate School to help families that can’t otherwise afford to get the supplies they need.

There were plenty of law enforcement officers staking out Dunkin Donuts on Aug. 14, including, from left, on the roof, Officer Sam Meshnick, Lt. Dan Conradt and Isaiah Manthey; on the ground, Officer Brandy Hoffman, Deputy Greg Dey and Officer T.J. Mueller. The officers partnered with the donut chain to hold Cop on a Rooftop, an event to raise money for Special Olympics.

Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will hold auditions Aug. 24-25 for its winter show, “Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Musical Radio Play” to be presented Dec. 3-6 and Dec. 10-13.

This show, directed by Debra Jolly, calls for male and female cast members, ages 8 and up, with a special tap dance number featuring children ages 8-12.

The parade theme for this year’s Shawano homecoming parade, sponsored by Shawano Community High School, the city of Shawano, Charter Casting and the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce, is “Out of This World.”

Oconto Falls High School will be inducting new people into its Wall of Fame on Oct. 3.

The induction ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the high school, 210 N. Farm Road, Oconto Falls. Past inductees are welcome to come to the ceremony but must RSVP by Sept. 14 by calling Donna Eckes at 920-848-4467.

Every year, hospitals throughout the region treat patients with serious injuries following ATV and UTV crashes.

Health care providers and public safety officials are reminding riders that these vehicles require the same caution and preparation as other motorized vehicles. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that children are at greater risk of serious injury and death in ATV and UTV crashes.

As families prepare for another school year, school supply lists, open houses and new schedules often top the to-do list. But there is one back-to-school essential that can have just as much impact on a child’s success in the classroom — sleep.

“Sleep plays a big role in kids’ brain development, behavior, learning, immunity and growth,” said Dr. Kevin Morgan, pediatrician at Aspirus Health.
