Oconto Falls Municipal Utilities workers have been assisting the crews of Menasha Utilities after a devastating EF-3 tornado swept through the city at the end of July, helping to restore electricity for more than 80% of area customers in the week that followed.

Most of the plans to reduce the size of the Shawano Speedway have been drawn up, but the question of who will pay for it still lingers.

For more than a year, track organizers have pushed to shrink the raceway from the half-mile to a three-eighths mile oval. It’s believed a shorter track will attract more drivers, which will lead to more fans and more money for all involved.

The Suring Area Historical Society Aug. 18 meeting will be held at the Suring Museum on Main Street.

Speakers for the meeting will be Jack and Darlene Valentine giving the history of Jerry Valentine’s role in the Suring area, and Darlene Valentine will touch on teaching as she and her mother-in-law, Violet Valentine, were teachers.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

The Shawano County Humane Society is changing its policy regarding animals brought into its shelter in Shawano, and it will require municipalities to cough up some money to help the society find homes for unwanted animals.

Ben Thomas, of Shawano, understands the desires of older adults who want to keep living in their homes.

Sometimes, home maintenance and minor repairs get put on the back burner, either because the seniors can’t do the work themselves or they can’t afford to hire a contractor.

Police calls are up 18% compared with this time last year, but that doesn’t translate to more crime in the city of Shawano.

Officer Tyler Thornborrow flips burgers on the grill Aug. 4 at Eberlein Park for the Shawano Police Department’s Lunch in the Park program. Thornborrow also serves as one of the school resource officers for the city, so he’ll be focusing on Shawano’s schools once they reopen in September.

A long line forms for children and adults alike to check out Eagle III, an air and ground medical transport for northeast Wisconsin, during National Night Out on Aug. 4 at Veterans Memorial Park in Pulaski. The helicopter landed shortly after 5 p.m. and was a big attraction at the event.

UW-Whitewater

Paige Abendroth, a native of Sobieski, whose major is business, is one of more than 400 student-athletes from UW-Whitewater who earned spots on the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Scholastic Honor Roll for the 2025-26 academic year. Students must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale to be recognized.

Abendroth was a member of the softball team.
