Richard Bosanko, retired Kenosha Fire Department battalion chief, posted these fire prevention signs in his yard where he now lives in Wittenberg. Bosanko said everyone should have working smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors on each level of their residence, as well as change the batteries when adjusting clocks.

A survey sent to families and staff within the Shawano School District shows an interest in keeping the calendar the district utilized while referendum projects were being completed.

The orange traffic cones that have been a common sight for a year in Gillett are disappearing as the city celebrated the reopening of state Highway 22 on Oct. 16, as well as a new playground facility at Zippel Park that replaces equipment old enough to qualify for retirement benefits.

Shawano County residents can expect to see a nominal increase in their county tax rate in 2027 assuming the proposed budget and levy are approved by the county board later this month.

Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the budget at 3:15 p.m. Oct. 28 in the County Board Room at the courthouse.

Temperatures are expected to fall to below the freezing mark the nights of Oct. 16 and Oct. 17, coinciding with the opening of SAM’s House emergency shelter for the 2026-27 season.

“We’re expecting a handful of people (the first night, Oct. 15),” said Kayla Bessette, executive director of Shawano Area Matthew 25. “They’ve been communicating with us about their need.”

The first round of bids for a new Shawano County Courthouse, 150-bed jail and jail auxiliary services resulted in a multimillion-dollar cost savings from what was budgeted.

Members of the public property committee approved and forwarded to the county board the bids recommended by Kurt Berner, of The Samuels Group.

“You had a great bid day,” he said. “You’re currently $6.5 million under the budget for bid pack 1.”

Officer Calvin Schultz with the Shawano Police Department received a commendation Oct. 14 during the Shawano Common Council meeting for his role in saving a suicidal teen.

Police Chief Mike Musolff said the Aug. 16 incident saw Schultz and two Shawano County sheriff’s deputies being called to help with a girl who appeared to be ready to jump from a bridge. The officers hurried forward and stopped the girl from jumping.

Two deer harvested on the Menominee Reservation have tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

One deer was a doe which was harvested in the Jackson Creek area and the other was a spike buck harvested near Southeast Pine Lake. All positive results to date have come in the southeast corner of the reservation.
