Defense helps keep Chargers undefeated

Two state-ranked teams, a combined a record of 23-1 and first place in the conference on the line added up to an intriguing girls basketball matchup Jan. 13 in Bonduel.

The intrigue didn’t last very long, however, as Wittenberg-Birnamwood held Bonduel to 12 points in the first half and cruised to a 58-35 win over the Bears.

Rogowski balances coaching with running a school district

Garrett Rogowski has a lot on his plate and wouldn’t want it any other way.

As administrator of the Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District, a position he has held since 2009, he deals with budgets, staffing and overseeing a district that includes three schools in two communities.

He’s also in his seventh season of coaching the Chargers boys basketball team.

Invasive species meeting their match

Japanese barberry and garlic mustard were the primary species treated in Shawano County by the Timberland Invasives Partnership in 2025.

The 14.3 acres treated for the two invasive species made up more than 50% of the 24.68 acres treated across the county, according to Brianna LeFebre, TIP coordinator.

Moonlight hike kicks off Pathways winter series

Nearly 40 outdoor enthusiasts participated in the first Shawano Pathways winter hike of 2026 on Jan. 3 at Kroenke Lake State Natural Area.

The event, a moonlight hike held on the night of the Wolf Moon — the first full moon of the new year — featured a winter trek through the state natural area and around the lake.
