Death of inmate raises questions

The death of a rural Lena man is raising questions as to whether Oconto County Jail inmates are receiving adequate medical care. Jeffrey “Jeff” Furst, 44, died Dec. 14 at a Green Bay hospital. According to Jail Administrator Carol Kopp, an ambulance was called at approximately 7 p.m. Dec. 13 for Furst, who was transferred to Bellin Health Oconto Hospital, then placed on a medical flight to Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.

Packers lose but hope remains
The Green Bay Packers’ roller-coaster season will continue for another week, despite a 38-31 loss Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the snow at Lambeau Field. The loss would have ended the postseason hopes for the Packers (7-7-1), but the Chicago Bears (8-7) were embarrassed 54-11 by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Bears beat Manawa by 30, snap 4-game skid
Connor Rosin scored 21 points, Colton Dobratz added 14 and the Bonduel High School boys basketball team swamped Manawa 69-39 in a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 road game Friday. The Bears (4-4, 1-3) had 11 players score on the night. Matt Radloff scored 10 points to lead Manawa (2-6, 0-4 CWC-8). The win snapped a Bonduel four-game losing streak.

Menominee Indian loses close game
Tough defense and some solid shooting from sophomore Dustin Waupoose were not enough to lift the Menominee Indian High School boys basketball team over Almond-Bancroft in a 54-47 loss Friday in Keshena. Hawks remain perfect in Bay
The Shawano Community High School boys basketball team followed up Tuesday’s thrilling win over Seymour with another Bay Conference win Friday night against Denmark to stay perfect in conference play. Rose Hendricks, 82, is a member of the St. Martin Council of Catholic Women in Cecil. The women have bake sales on Memorial Day and Labor Day along with brat sales at the Citgo Station. They pay for pamphlets for the parish and help stock the food pantry when necessary.

The American Association of Retired People, AARP, is a way for members to socialize and to get discounts with services. Garry Felts has been the local chapter’s president for a year and a half and a member for 18 years. “I don’t think I missed many meetings,” he said. AARP is an organization for people 50 and older that strives to enhance the quality of life of people as they age.

Bears dominate Manawa 60-19 The Bonduel High School girls basketball team dismantled Manawa 60-19 in a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 game Friday in Manawa. Jennifer Dowden had 19 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and five assists to lead Bonduel (5-1, 2-1 CWC-8). Alexa Reinke added 10 points. Deanna Zernicke had four steals and four assists.
