Board OKs 3% rate increase for SMC

Costs will go up in January for patients of Shawano Medical Center and those visiting four other ThedaCare hospitals in the region. ThedaCare’s Board of Directors this week approved a 3 percent hospital rate increase for SMC, Appleton Medical Center, New London Family Medical Center, and Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah. Rates for Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca will increase by 2.5 percent. The new rates are effective Jan.
Grandkids help with tasty treats
The Lehman bakery was open on Dec. 14, and I had two volunteer employees. Two granddaughters put their best effort forward to help grandma, and they exceeded the expectation. Actually one stayed over on Friday the 13th and made two batches of fudge for me. It is not that I can’t make the fudge myself, but the stirring causes my shoulder some pain, so I welcomed the help.
Letter: Everyone works together on Christmas show
To the editor: We have just completed four performances of the annual Mielke Arts Center Christmas show, an admission-free gift to area communities. As always, many talented people turned out to participate. Cast members ranged in age from 18 months to 89 years. Audiences were responsive and generous in donating to local animal shelters.

The Christmas season is winding down, and I marvel at the passage of time. As I get older, the days fly by so quickly. The seconds tick off at the same speed as they did when I was small, so why does it seem like they zip by now?
Hawks swimmers beat Rhinelander
The Shawano Community High School boys swim team beat Rhinelander 108-59 Tuesday in Rhinelander. The Hawks took first in eight events, led by Zach Soper’s first-place finishes in the 100-meter butterfly, with a time of 55.23 seconds, and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.14). Griffin Rades took first in the 200 individual medley (2:22.29) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.18). Adrian Tetting won the 200 freestyle (2:10.36).

County Board schedule won't change
The Shawano County Board of Supervisors voted 16-10 Wednesday against holding all of its meetings at night. The measure, because it would have changed County Board rules, required a two-thirds majority of the board (18 votes) to pass. The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday from May through September and at 9 a.m. the remaining months.
