Swifties turn their attention to birds

When I tell people I’m a swiftie, they ask what is my favorite song. While I like many of Taylor Swift’s songs and I admire all she has accomplished, I’m not talking about her. I’m talking about the unique and spectacular bird, the chimney swift. I had never witnessed the magical display of chimney swifts gathering at sunset to circle and slowly descend into a chimney to roost for the night.

On the date this column officially runs, I will be celebrating a birthday. It’s not a milestone or anything, but I always view birthdays as a good time to take stock. The next American Legion Gunless Poultry Shoot begins at 1 p.m. Nov. 16 at School House Bar, 14007 State Highway 32, Mountain. The Legion will raffle off packages of meat, poultry, sausages, bacon, beverages and items donated by local businesses. There will also be 50/50 and basket raffles.

Last Christmas, I asked for a Food Saver to vacuum-seal my garden produce. Sticking it in the pantry, I figured I’d pull it out one day. The snow encrusted landscape made it improbable I’d see green anytime soon. Green indeed came, and with it a garden that flourished. Well, not the broccoli (deer snipped the florets before they had a chance) and the peas were a little slack and the green beans were nothing to write home about. So what grew?
