At 6:57 p.m. Feb. 11 on Watercress Road in the town of Stiles, a woman from Lena backed from a parking space in a parking lot into another parked vehicle. Oconto County has issued almost $100,000 in emergency aid this winter to residents struggling to heat their homes, and according to one county official, another crisis is looming. The Lena Village Board on Feb. 17 began pursuing $3.4 million in financing needed for a project to reduce radium in the village’s water system. The village closed Well No. 1 last year under an agreement with the Department of Natural Resources, which found the well’s output exceeded U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards for radium. The village has been using Well No. 2 since closing No.

BMO Harris Bank will close its Gillett branch on March 1, but the building may quickly find a new purpose. According to Gillett Mayor Irene Drake, the city hopes to partner with the Gillett Public Library to purchase the building to use as a community activity and learning center.

Florence Drella, 93, formerly of Krakow, died peacefully in her sleep Thursday morning, Feb. 20, 2014, at a Green Bay hospital, four days shy of her 94th birthday. The daughter of John and Veronica (Drewiske) Maternoski was born Feb. 24, 1920, in the town of Glenmore. The family moved to the town of Chase when Florence was a child. On June 28, 1941, she married Raymond P. Drella at St. Joseph Church in Chase.
