The Oconto Falls High School girls basketball team earned a No. 1 seed and will open the WIAA Division 3 regional March 7 at home against either fourth-seeded Wittenberg-Birnamwood or fifth-seeded Clintonville. Wittenberg-Birnamwood (16-4, 11-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) and Clintonville (3-16, 2-12 Eastern Valley) play Tuesday in Wittenberg.

Dewey Krueger now has motivation going into the state wrestling tournament. That could be construed as a positive, but his performance at the WIAA Division 2 sectional Saturday in Seymour wasn’t at the level he’d like. The Oconto Falls junior cruised to the championship match at 145 but ended up falling in a 3-0 decision to Southern Door senior Jacob Englebert.

Bonduel boys fall to Amherst The Bonduel High School boys basketball team lost to Amherst 62-46 Friday in Amherst. Colton Dobratz and Zach Zernicke led Bonduel (10-11, 5-8 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) with eight points each. Hayden Blackford led Amherst (16-5, 10-4 CWC-8) with 31 points. The Central Wisconsin Conference race tightened even further Friday with Wittenberg-Birnamwood defeating league-leader Amherst in girls basketball action. Bonduel, meanwhile, trounced Stevens Point Pacelli 73-10 at home to set up a showdown with Amherst (16-3, 9-2 CWC-8) on Saturday. Jennifer Dowden led Bonduel (15-4, 10-2 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) with 12 points. Alexa Reinke added 11.

The Shawano Community High School girls basketball team played three solid quarters, but a lapse early in the second half Friday resulted in a 43-40 home loss to Luxemburg-Casco. “We have to adjust and learn,” Shawano coach Ryan Koenig said. “One quarter is killing us.

Shawano Community High School junior Zach Soper celebrated atop the podium twice Friday, winning both the 100-yard backstroke and 100 butterfly at the WIAA Division 2 state swim meet in Madison. This was Soper’s third trip to the state meet, held at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium, in both events. As a freshman, he finished 11th in the butterfly and 13th in the backstroke.

Farmers need to pay their income taxes by March 1, so that means when January rolls around, the bookwork is tackled in earnest. I rather enjoy the bookwork end of farming. We need to keep detailed income/expense accounts and know where every dollar went. I have a system of filing that I keep throughout the year. A file box with notated hanging folders keeps everything organized and in that manner I don’t tax my brain any more than necessary.
