Nothing takes me back to my childhood quicker than thoughts of what my parents taught me. A stretch in the exercise class, which required us to part our knees, made me think of my mother, who always warned that good girls didn’t sit like that. Of course, in that time, girls wore dresses or skirts, so it wouldn’t have been appropriate.

Jane Anderson is on the layette committee, volunteering through the Mission Commission at First Presbyterian Church in Shawano. She was born in Florida and moved to Shawano when she was 10. After graduating from Shawano High School, Anderson earned a degree in vocal music education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She taught for four years in Princeton Public Schools before returning to Shawano to help her dad.

The Kids Klub at First Presbyterian Church in Shawano is a gathering place for children 5 to 13 years old when they don’t have school. “When school is open, we’re closed, and when school is closed, we’re open,“ said Kim Kosmalski, program director. She oversees the staff, and does the office work and billing, lesson and activity planning, and meal planning. “It’s a program that is there to help the community and families,“ Kosmalski said.

Leonard A. Neosh, 52, of Neopit, died on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, in Appleton. Born on Sept. 8, 1961, in Shawano, he is the son of Thelma A. (Waubanascum) Neosh and the late Mose Neosh. Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country as a ranger. Leonard was united in marriage to Dorothy Weber on Oct. 31, 1999, in Keshena and was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Neopit.

Richard F. “Dick” Karst, 78, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at his home. Born on Jan. 28, 1936, in Oshkosh, he was one of 15 children born to the late Sylvester “Pat” and Lorraine C. (Gustavus) Karst. On Aug. 5, 1962, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Baier at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Oshkosh. After earning a bachelor’s degree, Dick worked as a metallurgist at Universal Foundry in Oshkosh until 1982.

Ethel L. Hass, 87, of Clintonville, and formerly of Tigerton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, at Greentree Health & Rehabilitation Center, Clintonville. The memorial service information is still pending. Beil-Didier Funeral Home, Tigerton, is assisting the family.

Elaine F. Jones, 75, of Bonduel, passed away with her family by her side on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the Shawano Medical Center. Elaine was born on Jan. 3, 1939, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of the late Mary (Fager) Gifford and Thomas Gifford. Elaine moved in the late 1950s to Wisconsin, where she would meet Earl Jones. Earl and Elaine were united in marriage on Aug.
