Menominee code talkers honored at pow-wow

Five Menominee Nation code talkers were honored Sunday during the 25th annual Gathering of Warriors pow-wow presented by the Veterans of the Menominee Nation at the Woodland Bowl in Keshena. In November, the Menominee and 24 other tribes received congressional gold medals to honor the code talkers, who used their native language to transmit secret messages in World War II, during a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Shawano gets No. 3 seed in softball tourney
The Shawano Community High School softball team earned a No. 3 seed in Division 2, Bonduel earned a No. 2 seed in Division 3 and Tigerton earned a No. 1 seed in Division 4 as the WIAA released softball tournament brackets this week. The seeds were determined by coaches at seeding meetings held throughout the state Wednesday. The Hawks will open the tournament Thursday against No.

Opening night magic
As opening nights go, this past Saturday’s tilt really had all one could ask for. To start with, the weather was fantastic. Winter hung around way too long this year and truly wore out its welcome. Sunshine and mild temps were the perfect way to start the 52nd year of racing at the historic half mile. Secondly, the racing action on the track was top notch. The night was filled with exciting side-by-side battles.

Truckers too much for Hawks
Fueled by an eight-run fourth inning, the Clintonville High School baseball team beat Shawano 12-0 in five innings of nonconference baseball Friday at Memorial Park. The Truckers took the lead in the first inning when Parker Mindel hit a ground ball to score Hunter Vollmer.

Area fortunate to have professional dive team
“Seven days without swimming make one weak.” — Unknown The Shawano County dive team started in 1984 when two sport divers from the Shawano Police Department, Sgt. Al Schultz and Sgt. Ed Whealon, volunteered to search for a 2-year-old child believed to have drowned in the Wolf River. The group has since evolved into a highly skilled and professional dive team with 11 members. I visited with Shawano Police Chief Mark Kohl earlier this week.

Audrey E. Schultz
Audrey E. Schultz, 79, of Shawano, passed away peacefully early Friday morning, May 16, 2014, at the Shawano Medical Center, where she had been a patient the past two weeks. Audrey was born Aug. 9, 1934, in Abingdon, England, a daughter of the late Leslie and Mary (Coster) Crapper.

Dorothy D. Koeller
Dorothy D. Koeller, 93, formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, May 14, 2014, at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, Va. Dorothy had lived in Virginia for the past two years. The former Dorothy Rambo was born on Feb. 1, 1921, in Milwaukee, a daughter of the late William and Rose (Vieau) Rambo. At an early age, Dorothy moved to Shawano from Milwaukee. On Nov. 26, 1938, she was united in marriage to Alvin Koeller at St.

Ansel L. Malcore
Ansel L. Malcore, 79, of Shawano, formerly of Green Bay, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at his home. He was born Feb. 25, 1935, on the family farm in Green Bay to the late Gustave “Gus” and Grace (Jadin) Malcore. Ansel was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and its ROTC program. Following high school he joined the armed services and became a corporal in the Marine Corps.

Marion grad to be ordained into priesthood
Bishop David L. Ricken of the Diocese of Green Bay will ordain deacon Ryan Starks, a 2006 graduate of Marion High School, to the priesthood at 10 a.m. May 31 at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. Starks’ home parish is St. Mary in Marion.

Arts council needs members, volunteers
I’m writing this on Mother’s Day. You might think I shouldn’t have time to be sitting at the computer on this special day. Well, the fact is, we had a lovely brunch with two of our children and grandchildren earlier today, and we visited our other daughter in Readstown on Friday and Saturday.
