Before seniors at Gillett High School flip the tassel of their mortarboards to alumni status on Sunday, they walked down memory lane with some of the people who shaped their path in education. The Gillett School District provides a unique opportunity for each graduating senior to offer input to the School Board at small-group meetings.

The Machickanee Advancement Association is seeking volunteers to serve on its board of directors. The association was formed in the 1960s with the goal of providing stewardship of the Machickanee Flowage and surrounding forest. The association has received a grant from ST Paper in Oconto Falls and, together with some county funds, proposes to construct a new handicap-accessible fishing dock.

The American Legion Post 302 and Auxiliary in Oconto Falls will mark Memorial Day weekend with a fundraising push. Proceeds will be used to develop a veterans memorial on Central Avenue.

A four-day Memorial Day celebration in Oconto Falls will feature the customary favorites, such as carnival rides, fireworks, a softball tournament and parade, but behind the scenes, change is brewing. The Oconto Falls Booster Club, longtime sponsors of the holiday tradition, will coordinate the celebration for the last time. Saying it’s time for young faces and young ideas, Oconto Falls Police Chief Mike Roberts will retire June 3 after a 35-year career with the city. The Shawano Community High School track and field teams won conference championships in two events at the Bay Conference meet Saturday in Denmark. The Hawks finished fifth in the boys meet and eighth in the girls meet but won both the 4x200-meter relays. Seymour won the girls and boys titles. “With the (low) numbers (on the team), we were not really going to be able to compete as a team,” Shawano coach Scott Smurawa said.
