Authorities last week destroyed more than 900 marijuana plants discovered growing on the Menominee Indian Reservation, Tribal Police announced Tuesday. The eradication was executed during the early morning hours of Aug. 14 in a heavily wooded area on the reservation.

Bonduel School District voters Monday approved an increase in the tax levy for the upcoming school year as cuts in state aid force local property owners to pick up more of the expense of education. About 20 district voters turned out to approve a $4.47 million levy; up more than $280,000 over last school year’s figure. The district is projecting a tax rate of $10.30 per $1,000 of equalized value, compared to last year’s $9.50 per $1,000. The levy

The Shawano County Finance Committee put replacement of Sheriff’s Department radios on the fast track this week. The committee voted 4-0, with Supervisor Marlin Noffke absent, to recommend that the County Board free up $214,408 to replace 50 radios — 34 in patrol vehicles and 16 portable radios — that do not work with the department’s new digital simulcast system. The measure will go to the board Aug.

A string of powerful thunderstorms packing reported wind gusts of 70 mph and in some places quarter-size hail wreaked havoc throughout the area Wednesday evening. The storms caused the death of a Menominee County woman who was killed when a tree fell on top of her car in Keshena.

Shawano Police Department Aug. 18 Police logged 12 incidents, including the following: Warrant — A 22-year-old man was taken into custody on a warrant at Richmond and Washington streets. Warrant — A 26-year-old man was taken into custody on a warrant in the 400 block of South Sawyer Street. Bail Jumping — A 49-year-old man was taken into custody for bail jumping at Hensel’s Shawano Inn, 134 S. Washington St. Aug.

The Shawano School District received a very vocal majority from the 100-plus residents in attendance supporting the 2013-14 school budget of $26.7 million during Monday’s annual meeting. However, some residents questioned why they were approving the budget now instead of waiting until key final numbers are available in October. The budget is preliminary, and the final budget will not be approved by the School Board until the end of October.

Smokey Bear will stick to the main drag in Oconto Falls, but the ranger station he represents will move a few blocks away. That’s the vision proposed by representatives of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, who want to purchase land in the Oconto Falls industrial park to upgrade and enlarge the ranger station. A local outreach office has outgrown its facility and plans to move to a new location. The Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Wolf River Region requested a permit to move to the Custom Metals Specialists building, 229 Van Buren St., Oconto Falls. The Oconto Falls High School girls golf team will play three matches this week and three more next week. After the Panthers played on a perfect day Friday for the Oconto Falls Scramble, temperatures are set to climb for the team’s marathon start to the golf season. “It’s supposed to be in the 90s,” Oconto Falls coach Paul Luebke said. “That’s a whole different ball of wax. (The players) are going to have to go up against the elements.
