Most of power restored on Menominee Reservation

The post-storm situation on the Menominee Indian Reservation was significantly improved Friday, with power restored to the majority of those affected by a fierce string of storms that hammered the region Wednesday night. Tribal Chairman Craig Corn said Friday afternoon that 300 to 400 were still without power, but crews were doing all they could to get things back up and running for them. Wet, cool weather impacts crops
Blackberries are usually ripe by now in the Navarino Wildlife Area, which is what prompted Navarino Nature Center to plan a fun event involving blackberry picking. But the event, originally scheduled for Aug. 7, had to be pushed back a week when blackberries were nowhere ripe enough to be picked, according to Jackie Wilber, assistant naturalist for the center. Menominee Kenosha casino gets OK
The Menominee Indian Tribe scored a significant victory Friday toward its longtime goal of opening a casino in Kenosha, leaving it up to the governor to decide whether that dream will come true. Funding plan for evidence building put on hold
It will be at least another month before the Shawano County Board will again consider funding a new evidence storage facility. The Finance Committee voted this week to postpone a decision on taking $715,000 from the county’s general fund to construct an evidence storage building at the Huber Work Release Center in Shawano. The proposal first went before the Public Property Committee on Aug.

Reckless endangerment A Clintonville man was bound over for trial Wednesday on felony counts of reckless endangerment and intimidating a victim after a preliminary hearing in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court. Sam Begay, 44, could face a maximum possible penalty of 12½ years in prison and a $25,000 fine if convicted of recklessly endangering safety, and 10 years and a $25,000 fine for intimidation.

MISD programs well-received
More than 200 Menominee Indian School District students enrolled in summer learning programs designed to help them prepare for the upcoming school year. “When school is out, we offer opportunities to engage our students in continued learning,” MISD Superintendent Wendell Waukau said.

Excavation begins at medical center site
Heavy construction and excavation equipment this week moved onto the site of the new ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano at County Road B and state Highway 22. According to Matt Peterson, project manager at The Boldt Co. of Appleton, the project’s general contractor and construction management firm, the first tasks are site preparation work. “We started with removal of trees and existing storm water ponds,” he said.

Hawks golfers 8th in Bay match
The Shawano Community High School girls golf team had a down day at a Bay Conference match Wednesday at Grand View Golf Course in Hortonville. The Hawks finished eighth with a score of 232. Denmark scored 189 to win the event. Megan Beck shot a 54 to lead Shawano. Courtney Baumann carded a 56, Julia Beck 57, Emily Smith 65 and Cheyenne Knueppel 73. Denmark’s Meaghan Carney was the medalist with a 38.
