Oconto and Marinette counties have agreed to purchase six lots adjacent to the landfill they share, after the property owners filed suit against the counties, claiming the smell and look of the landfill hurt their business and deterred sales of the lots to private parties. The MarOco Landfill, jointly owned by Oconto and Marinette counties, will use $250,000 in reserve funds to purchase the lots from Charles and Colleen DeSmidt, owners of DeSmidt

The Oconto Falls High School girls golf team finished in eighth place at the Bay Conference tournament Tuesday at Wander Springs Golf Course in Greenleaf. The finish was not enough for Oconto Falls (16) to catch Luxemburg-Casco (28) in the final conference standings.

It was a second-place finish for the Oconto Falls High School volleyball team Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Showdown volleyball tournament. The Panthers lost to Union Grove 2-1 in the championship match. Union Grove won the first game 25-18, Oconto Falls rallied to win the second game 25-23, but fell 15-13 in game 3. Oconto Falls went 6-1 at the two-day, 32-team tournament.

Panthers sweep West De Pere The Oconto Falls High School volleyball team swept West De Pere 3-0 in a Bay Conference match Sept. 24 in De Pere. The Panthers (3-0) beat West De Pere (1-2) 25-9, 25-18, 25-9. McKenna Larsen and Carly Lemke combined for 29 kills. Larsen had 18 assists and eight digs. Lemke also had three blocks. McKayla Johnson had three assists and 20 digs.

The Oconto Falls High School boys cross-country team finished second and Bailey Wolf took fourth Thursday at the 38th annual Jim Bremser Memorial Cross Country Invitational in Mishicot. The Panthers boys had a team score of 91 to finish second at the 24-team meet. Freedom (27) took first and Two Rivers (98) finished third. The OFHS girls team finished 12th with a team score of 299.

The second barn quilt in the Barn Quilts of Oconto County project was installed at the Linzmeyer farm in Gillett by the linemen from the Oconto Electric Cooperative. The quilt block pattern chosen by Nancy Linzmeyer is Spring Radiance, and the red, white and blue color choice was chosen to honor veterans. An Oconto Falls school on Saturday will celebrate 100 years of weaving together spirituality and academics. St. Anthony School will commemorate a century of providing a Catholic education to thousands of children. The theme for the anniversary is Honor the Past, Celebrate the Future. “I think 100 years means we’re doing the job we’re supposed to be doing and that God really wants us here,” said Rosie Marifke, principal.

The Machickanee Players will top off their 30th anniversary season with a musical melodrama, “The Drunkard or Down with Demon Drink,” by Brian J. Burton. The show features the talent of Derek Beaumia as the young hero, Jen Longsine as the innocent heroine, and Lyle Nichols as the villain. The action on stage is supplemented by “olio” acts between the scenes, which are representative of a vaudeville-style show.
