Motorists should be keeping an especially keen eye out for deer over the next couple of months as the mating season gets under way, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The season is at its peak in October and November and deer are more active, particularly at dusk and dawn when they move back and forth between their bedding and feeding areas.

A special zoning exception for the petting zoo at Anello’s Torch Lite was tabled by the Plan Commission on Wednesday amid questions about federal rules that couldn’t be immediately answered due to the government shutdown. The commission seemed inclined to grant the special exception, with the proviso that the petting zoo maintain a license granted by the U.S.

The dust is finally settling on a $900,000 expansion at Shawano Community High School, giving agriculture and technical education classes a little more wiggle room. June R. Buchberger, 75, of Clintonville, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Appleton Medical Center. June was born on May 29, 1938, in Clintonville, the daughter of the late Herman and Alma (Schoeneck) Ebert. June lived her entire life in Clintonville, where she graduated from high school in 1955. Sam W. House Sr., 79, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, in Appleton. Born on Oct. 17, 1933, in Dickson County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Pauletta (Carr) Snead. On Jan. 24, 1955, he was united in marriage to Shirley A. Anderson in Chicago. After marriage the couple moved to the town of Red Springs, where they owned and operated a dairy farm for nearly 30 years.

Otto Wagner Jr., 86, of the town of Hartland, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, in Shawano. Born on Sept. 10, 1927, in the town of Hartland, he was the son of the late Otto and Ida (Krause) Wagner. Otto lived his entire life on the family farm in the town of Hartland. He also worked as a mechanic for the Shawano County Highway Department for many years. On Jan. 29, 1949, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Bernarde.

Shawano Police Department Sept. 30 Police logged 24 incidents, including the following: Juvenile — Police investigated a juvenile alcohol complaint in the 100 block of South Washington Street. Fire — A fire call at Qualheim’s True Value, 1345 E. Green Bay St., turned out to be a false alarm. Accident — A 42-year-old Cecil man was cited for inattentive driving after a two-vehicle accident at Green Bay and Lincoln streets.

The Shawano County Tribal Affairs Committee opted to take no action Tuesday on a request by one member to use $1,500 in Ho-Chunk gaming compact funds to fix stop signs. Instead, the request to find funding for the signs will go to the Highway and Finance departments. Supervisor Marion Wnek explained that there is a flashing stop sign at the intersection of County roads D and Q west of Bowler that recently stopped flashing.

The Shawano School Board Executive Committee is recommending that a vacant board seat created by Jim Heinz’s resignation be filled, even though the seat is up for election in six months. The committee agreed by consensus Monday to send out a notice seeking interested candidates who reside within the Shawano School District. The deadline for applicants is Oct. 18, and the applicants will make their case before the School Board on Oct.
