County Board to review meeting schedule

The issue of what time of day the County Board should meet is rearing its head again, but with committee backing this time. The Administrative Committee approved a recommendation Monday to approve a resolution changing the County Board meetings to evenings year-round. The measure, which would alter County Board Rule 1, will go before the County Board on Dec. 18. The County Board usually meets at 6 p.m.
More challengers emerge for board incumbents
At least six Shawano County Board races are shaping up for the spring election. All 27 county supervisors will be up for re-election April 1. Potential candidates have until Jan. 7 to get their nomination papers and 20 signatures returned to the county clerk’s office. All but three incumbents have taken papers out for another run. District 5 Supervisor Sandy Steinke has said she is not seeking re-election due to time conflicts with her job.
Lincoln School makes historic registers
The former Lincoln School has made the grade when it comes to history; winning a spot on both the state and national registers of historical places. The property was entered last month in the National Register of Historic Places by the Secretary of the Interior, and listed in the Wisconsin Register of Historic Places by the State Historic Preservation Office. Wilhelmina Wagner, 95, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, Dec. 10, 2013, at Evergreen Care Center in Shawano. Funeral services for Wilhelmina will be held on Friday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Pastor Dan Taylor will officiate. Shirley A. Kraeger
Shirley A. Kraeger, 83, of Shawano, and formerly of the Marion area, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at her home. The former Shirley Anne Felts was born Aug. 29, 1930, in the town of Seneca, Shawano County, to William and Olga (Giessel) Felts. As a young girl, her parents attended and “lived at” many county fairs, especially in Shawano and Wausau. Shirley always loved farming and Jersey cattle.
Joyce Marie Hermann
Joyce Marie Hermann, 73, of Newport News, Va., passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013. She was born in Shawano. Joyce loved boating, golfing and having fun with all her friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, John Hermann. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Va. Irene M. Mavis
Irene E. Mavis, 81, Wittenberg, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2013, at the Homme Home of Wittenberg under the care of AseraCare Hospice Services. She was born on May 9, 1932, in Birnamwood, the daughter of the late Herman and Margaret (Joas) Leider. On Aug. 29, 1953, Irene was united in marriage to Carl Frederick William Mavis at Trinity Lutheran Church, Birnamwood. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 2005. Irene and Carl farmed in Wittenberg until 1977.
Betty Jane Heling
Betty Jane Heling, 79, of Gillett, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, in Shawano. Born on April 9, 1934, in the town of Belle Plaine, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Laura (Krause) Krause. Betty lived most of her life in Shawano County. On March 16, 1952, she was united in marriage to Donald Heling. The couple had eight children together before separating.
