Gillett police officer resigns

Officer Ben Hicks has resigned from the Gillett Police Department to accept a position with the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department. The Gillett City Council on Thursday accepted his resignation, which took effect Dec. 31. The city plans to promote one of its three part-time officers to fill the position. Oconto County Circuit Court
Proceedings from Jan. 2 Keith A. Manecke, 51, Gillett, made an initial appearance on charges of strangulation and suffocation, domestic abuse and disorderly conduct. He was arrested Dec. 30 in the town of Underhill. His appearance is continued to Jan. 9, and a $500 cash bond was set.

Lena pursues project to curb radium in drinking water
The village of Lena is seeking state approval to spend $3.74 million to install equipment that would reduce radium levels in drinking water to accepted standards. Radium levels in one of the village’s two wells have increased during the past four years. The average of samples drawn last year exceeded maximum contamination levels set by the U.S.

Incumbents decide to leave Gillett council
Two Gillett aldermen say they will not run for re-election because they are unhappy with the workings of the City Council. Rick Raatz, Ward 1, and Tod Anderson, Ward 2, submitted noncandidacy forms in December. Anderson served on the council from 2006-2008, lost the election in 2008 and returned in 2010. Raatz joined the council in 2010.

Lillian V. Leja
Lillian V. Leja, 91, Abrams, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Rebekah Haven in Green Bay, surrounded by family. Lillian, the daughter of John and Mary (Sepiol) Dworniczak, was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Poznań, Poland. She spent her first birthday crossing the Atlantic Ocean with her family as they came to America. They settled in Chicago, where Lillian lived until she was 16 years old.

Dorothy M. Bubb
Dorothy M. Bubb, 90, Oconto Falls, died Saturday evening, Jan. 4, 2014, at the Woodlands of Gillett. She was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Oconto Falls to Albert and Hattie (Sell) Montie and grew up in the area. On Dec. 14, 1940, she married Jerome Bubb in Marinette. Dorothy lived for most of her life in rural Oconto Falls where she enjoyed tending her large flower and vegetable gardens.

Steve J. Yatso
Steve J. Yatso, 90, of Boulder City, Nev., formerly of Wisconsin, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 5, 2014, at the home of his niece near Black Creek. He was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Exeter, Penn., to Steven Sr. and Mary (Mikeska) Yatso. As a little boy, Steve moved with his parents to the Oconto Falls area, where he graduated high school with the Class of 1942. Following graduation, he entered the U.S.

Auditions set for ‘Little Shop of Horrors’
Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will hold auditions for its next musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 8 and 9 at The Byng Community Theater, 5852 Maple St., Abrams.
