SACF announces nearly $35,000 in grants

The Shawano Area Community Foundation on Friday announced $34,877 in grants from its Shawano Area Fund to 12 charitable organizations serving people in Shawano County. Shawano police chief plans to retire
Shawano Police Chief Ed Whealon on Friday announced he will retire in April. Dangerous cold front to blanket state
After a month of temperatures regularly dipping, and sometimes plummeting below zero, officials warned Friday that the worst is yet to come. The National Weather Service warned that a powerful arctic cold front would usher in the coldest air mass Wisconsin has seen in years, with near-record lows and winds of 10 to 20 mph. Locked out and purseless
Somehow the calendar slips into another new year. The challenge will be to remember to write 2014 instead of 2013. I am sure it will take me a week or two. I ushered out the old year with a day of volunteering at the LCFS Thrift Shop in Shawano.

Contending with the cold
I felt it coming. The Sunday morning before the recent cold snap moved in was almost balmy. As the day progressed, I sensed an apprehension, a conscious awareness of what was to come. The wind picked up, and as we maneuvered our way around the farm to do chores and head out to attend church, one could tell that a change was coming. Sure enough, later in the day the outside temperature gauge inside our car showed a minus-zero reading.

Volunteer Profile
Jean Hinkfuss volunteers at the Lutheran Counseling and Family Services Thrift Store at 2324 E. Richmond St., Shawano. The store accepts donations of clothing, household goods, books, knickknacks, jewelry and furniture. Hinkfuss is in charge of lingerie and purses. She was born in the town of Center and grew up in Black Creek. After graduating from Fox Valley Lutheran High School, she worked at AAL, now Thrivent Financial, for six years.

Bears get win after 2-week layoff
The Bonduel High School girls basketball team beat Sturgeon Bay 47-25 in a nonconference game Friday in Sturgeon Bay. The Bears (6-1, 2-1 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) jumped out big in the third quarter, outscoring Sturgeon Bay (3-4, 2-3 Packerland) 12-3 to take a 33-18 lead. “We worked on our defense tonight,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden said.
