Packers foundation donates to Rural Health Initiative

The Green Bay Packers Foundation is supporting farm families in Outagamie, Shawano and Waupaca counties through a $1,000 grant to the Rural Health Initiative. The Rural Health Initiative takes health care directly to farmers in their homes by sending a registered nurse to area farms for health screenings and to provide practical health and wellness advice. Reginald G. Maltbey
Reginald G. “Reggie” Maltbey, 78, of Appleton, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at his home. He was born in Shawano on Jan. 11, 1935, to the late George and Marryella (Rosenow) Maltbey. Reginald served in the Army from 1954-1957. He married Janet Frank on July 7, 1958, in Menominee, Mich. Prior to his retirement, Reggie worked at Appleton Coated Paper for 12 years and Miller Electric for 27 years.

Janet E. Sorenson
Janet E. Sorenson, 66, Shawano, formerly of Green Bay, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at her home. She was born Jan. 13, 1947, in Green Bay to Walter and Elizabeth Sorenson. Janet had been employed at Oneida Golf and Riding Country Club, and more recently at K-Mart.

Larry W. Lane
Larry W. Lane, 63, of Menasha, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King. He was born in Appleton on Feb. 16, 1950, the son of Vernon L. Lane and Betty G. (Bleck) Lane. Larry was a proud Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Challenge the Outdoors and loved to hunt, boat and fish.

Shawano teen takes plea deal in car-theft spree

Steinke quits job to seek re-election
District 5 Supervisor Sandy Steinke said in an interview Wednesday that she quit her new job because she couldn’t get time away to attend Shawano County Board meetings. Steinke originally said last month she would not run for another term on the board because of time conflicts with her job. The board meets at 6 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday from May through September and at 9 a.m.

Late filing delays Clintonville ballot
There will be several races on the ballot in Clintonville for the April 1 general election, but it was not clear Wednesday whether the ballot would include a challenge to Mayor Judith Magee. Tricia Rose, publisher of the Clintonville Chronicle, planned to file papers to challenge Magee. Rose was backing out of a parking space to take her nomination papers to City Hall about 12 minutes before the 5 p.m.

Polar vortex bites into school schedules
The polar vortex that gripped Wisconsin and half of the United States in its frigid grip this week impacted area schools as much as any other entity. Schools were closed Monday and Tuesday after temperatures approached minus 20 degrees and wind chills went beyond minus 40 degrees at times.

Soper eyes third trip to state
Shawano Community High School swimmer Zach Soper came up just short against Grafton senior Al Nenning for the 100-yard backstroke state championship in February. Hawks 6th at Trocat Scramble
Cody Urban and Mike Meisner took home championships for the Shawano Community High School wrestling team at the Trocat Scramble wrestling tournament Saturday at Green Bay West High School. Shawano took sixth in the tournament, scoring 152 points. Whitnall won with a score of 259.5, followed by Peshtigo (240.5), Mishicot (206) and West De Pere (187).
