Marlo King

Marlo King, 39, of Neopit, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. Born on March 3, 1974, in Green Bay, she was the daughter of Orlin D. and Pamela L. (King) Webster Sr. Marlo was enrolled at the College of the Menominee Nation pursuing a career as a certified nursing assistant with hopes of caring for her mother. She was also planning a summer 2014 wedding to Ramon Crow.
Shawano High Class of 1953 holds reunion
Thirty-six members of the Shawano High School Class of 1953, along with spouses and guests, met at the Shawano County Park Pavilion recently for their 60-year class reunion. Honored guests at the anniversary event included coach Russ Owen, his wife, Pat, and their daughter, Kay, and former teacher Vera Drengler and her daughter, Joan. Ada Deer, who was the class vice president, served as emcee for the event.
Helen J. Ebert
Helen J. Ebert, 99, of Tigerton, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Shawano Medical Center. The former Helen Jeannette Klement was born May 3, 1914, in Leopolis to Jacob and Barbara (Kutil) Klement. She was united in marriage on June 2, 1938, to Urban M. Ebert at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leopolis. Helen was a lifelong resident of the Leopolis, Marion and Tigerton areas.
Erik Awonohopay
Erick “Bigg E” Awonohopay, 40, of Baraga, Mich., passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital. He was born Jan. 23, 1973, in Albany, Minn., son to Richard and Mary (Froland) Awonohopay. Erick graduated from Menominee High School in 1993 and then attended Bay Mills Community College. He worked in many casinos as a dealer and for the past 10 years was a disc jockey for Eagle Radio.
Harold Westphal
Harold Fredrick Herbert “Pete” Westphal, 78, of Bonduel, passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, in Shawano. Born on Oct. 27, 1934, in Bonduel, he was the sixth of seven children born to Fred C. and Lydia (Deede) Westphal. Pete attended St. Paul Lutheran School in Bonduel and graduated from Bonduel High School in 1953. He was a member of the conference champion boys basketball team and was chosen as prom king.
Anvelink drives through traffic to Late Model win
The Late Model battle for the track championship got a little tighter Saturday night as Nick Anvelink’s feature win moved him to within 15 points of leader Ron Berna. Matt Oreskovich won the IMCA Modified feature, while Brandon Czarapata won another IMCA Stock Car feature.
Shawano golfers fifth at Denmark
The Shawano Community High School girls golf team finished fifth at a Bay Conference match Monday at Twin Oaks Golf Course in Denmark. The Hawks had a team score of 230.
Bonduel football team targets playoffs
The Bonduel High School football team was eliminated from the playoffs a season ago with a 36-22 loss to Central Wisconsin Conference-8 foe Manawa in the homecoming game. The sting of that loss hasn’t left the players retuning this season. “For this year, we have to push each other that much harder just to make the playoffs,” said 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior linebacker Jacob Wudtke. “Maybe even make a good dent in the conference this year.
Hawks open season with shutout
Garret Schlise scored two goals as the Shawano Community High School boys soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a 5-0 victory over visiting Freedom. The win was a good start for a team with high expectations. “They played well,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “They played together as a team and I was happy with what happened tonight, for the most part.” The Hawks’ victory began with an unassisted Schlise goal 9:25 into the match.

Shawano Police Department Aug. 19 Police logged 18 incidents, including the following: Vandalism — Police responded to a vandalism complaint in the 800 block of South Smalley Street. Drug Offense — Three La Crosse men — ages 24, 29 and 36 — were cited for possession, and two of the men were taken into custody on outstanding warrants after Kwik Trip, 1241 E. Green Bay St., reported workers on the roof were smoking marijuana.
