Hawks expect to contend for Bay Conference championship

If things fall into place for the Shawano girls basketball team, the Hawks will be one of the favorites to win a Bay Conference championship.

Although it’s still early in the season, coach Ryan Koenig is convinced his team is headed in the right direction. The Hawks improved to 4-0 on Dec. 4 with a 58-27 nonconference win over Waupaca on the Comets’ home court.

Charger boys beat Eagles at the buzzer

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 60, Menominee Nation 58

The Chargers boys basketball team kicked the year off with a buzzer beater win over the Eagles of Menominee Nation on Dec. 4.

Zandyr Barke hit a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to give the Chargers a 60-58 win at Keshena.

Lena, Shawano girls run over opponents

Lena 76, Stockbridge 21

The Wildcats pounced on the Indians for 62 points in the first half, as Lena went to defeat Stockbridge 76-21.

With a 62-3 lead at the half, Lena cooled down after the break, as Stockbridge outscored their hosts 18-14 in the second half.

Lena improved to 4-0, while Stockbridge dropped to 0-4.

Shawano 58, Waupaca 27

Shawano boys clean house in opening wrestling contests

Shawano’s boys wrestlers enjoyed a great night on the mats with the Hawks winning all three nonconference duals at home Dec. 4.

The Hawks defeated Oconto 58-12, Bonduel 55-12 and Ashwaubenon 52-24. The only losses for Shawano were forfeits due to injuries.

“I really liked the way the kids fought tonight,” coach Mike Homan said. “In competitive matches, they continued to fight and move forward in their attacks.”

Shawano girls lose trio of wrestling duals

Shawano’s girls wrestling team faced some tough competition at Bay Port on Dec. 4, with coach Stacey Homan noting the team has things to work on. The Hawks fell in all three matches – 53-12 to Bay Port, 45-21 to Neenah and 48-21 to Bonduel.

Ice Bears win in shutout

The Bay Area Ice Bears improved to 4-0 while handing Lakeshore Lightning its first loss of the season in a 4-0 shutout Dec. 4 at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

After a scoreless first period, Elizabeth Bunker scored 40 seconds into the second stanza with an assist by Addison Dahl. Lily Lyons then assisted Aisling Buchan when she scored at 3:15.

Panthers struggle in conference opener

After opening the season with losses to Menominee Nation and Kewaunee, the Oconto Falls girls basketball team hoped to turn the tide in its North Eastern Conference opener.

The Waupaca Comets had other plans, however.

The Comets scored 21 of the game’s first 23 points and cruised to a 59-23 win over the Panthers on Dec. 2 at Waupaca High School.
