The recent death of one of my Oconto Falls High School classmates, Janet Valenta Haffeman, sent my mind racing back in time to our high school days and even a few years before that. Janet was one of my favorite roller-skating partners back in the ’50s.

The Oconto Falls High School Music Department awarded $200 scholarships to students who participated in choir or band for the past four years and excelled in musicianship, leadership and character. The choir recipients are Arianna Bloom, Eva Finke, Megan Heller, Kaylie Hetzel, Hannah Knutson, Carly Lemke and Kaitlyn Spaude. The band recipients are Rebecca Doan, Holly Johnston, Cody Tappa, Adam Thomson and Stephanie Wirtz.

Greg Zeitler received the 2013-14 Educator of Excellence Award, sponsored by the Nicolet Oconto Retired Teachers Association, for the Gillett School District. He was selected by the Gillett School District faculty. Zeitler graduated from Coleman High School. He received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in 1993.

Sherry Christianson, fourth-grade teacher at Wabeno Elementary School, has been chosen by the Wabeno Education Association as an Educator of Excellence for the 2013-2014 school year. In nominating Christianson for the award, instructor Jody Kalata wrote: “Sherry has stepped out of her comfort zone and given up individual voice and control of her own classroom to be part of a teaching team.

Shawano Police Department June 15 Police logged 16 incidents, including the following: Suspicious — Police responded to a suspicious person complaint at Lieg Avenue and Union Street. Burglary — Police investigated a burglary complaint at Joker Fireworks, 105 N. Airport Drive. Vandalism — A truck was reported egged in the 600 block of Wolf River Avenue. Disturbance — Police responded to a disturbance at the Wisconsin House, 216 E.

Nick Anvelink left the Shawano Speedway a bit richer after topping a field of 36 Late Models and taking home the $2,000 top prize that went with it Saturday on Seubert Calf Ranches Night. Travis VanStraten put an end to Kyle Frederick’s winning streak in the IMCA Stock Car class.

Shawano 12, Pulaski 10 The Shawano Lobos baseball team won the Pulaski Tournament with a 12-10 win over Pulaski in the championship game Friday in Pulaski. Bryce Szymanski earned the win. Grant Bystol was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament. He went 6 for 10 with a home run.

East-West Divisions Caroline 5, Shawano 2 Mike Weatherwax earned the win as Ben Scheidermayer took the loss. Rob Umland Jr. led Shawano with two hits. Ryan Brietenfeldt and Mark Maas each had two hits. Leopolis 17, Menominee 10 Bryce Rodriquez had a home run, Tyler Dillenberg was 3 for 6, and Kyle Hoffman was 3 for 5 with a double for Leopolis. Hunter Hoffman earned the win.

Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a single-vehicle crash in the town of Richmond, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department said. The initial investigation indicates that a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado was westbound on state Highway 29 near County Road MMM shortly after 8 a.m. when it lost control, crossed the median and rolled over. Sally Schmandt, a 79-year-old female passenger from Marion, was pronounced dead at the scene.
