Sacred Heart Catholic School This week marked the end of 24 years of service to our school for Carol Aschenbrenner. She has served on our support staff as a supervisor outside and inside the lunchroom. We wish her well on her retirement. People like Carol make our school a great place to be. This week we take time to show how thankful we are to those who support our school in time, money and talents.

A fast start and some timely shooting from the bench lifted the Shawano Community High School boys basketball team past Sheboygan North 68-51 in a nonconference game Tuesday in Shawano. Bears improve to 3-0 for season The Bonduel High School boys basketball team continued its hot start with a 55-31 win over Coleman in a nonconference game Monday in Coleman. Hunter VanderLinden led an evenly distributed attack for the Bears (3-0) with nine points. Connor Rosin and Zach Zernicke added eight points each.

Jean F. Kafura, 84, of Big Lake, Gresham, and formerly of Appleton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013. Born on July 25, 1929, in Appleton, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Edith (Gerharz) Fellows. On Nov. 28, 1947, Jean was united in marriage to Frederick Kafura, who preceded her in death on Jan. 12, 2008. Jean loved the holidays, especially decorating, cooking and baking, and liked to refer to herself as a household engineer.

Two people have been charged with drug-related felonies in connection with a marijuana operation discovered more than three years ago when authorities executed a search warrant for child pornography in the town of Morris. Shawn L. Hickey, 45, and Diane L. Potschaider, 55, both of Tigerton, each face a felony count of manufacture and delivery of marijuana. The search warrant was executed in May 2010.

Shawano Police Department Nov. 25 Police logged 21 incidents, including the following: Burglary — Police were investigating numerous break-in complaints at the storage units at 1213 Beauprey Road. Eight units were reported burglarized, and a vehicle was reported stolen from one of them. Juvenile — Police logged four truancy complaints from Shawano Community Middle School, 1050 S.

The cost to prepare the annual Thanksgiving feast will be lower in Shawano than the state average, according to a Wisconsin Farm Bureau survey. The survey results, released last week, show that it will cost $47.65 locally to prepare a dozen items for a family of 10.

A citizen task force charged with finding a future use for the Shawano Medical Center will forward two options to the city’s Plan Commission, but not until heirs to the property sign off on changing a deed restriction on the property. The task force met last week for the fifth time since it formed in July.

Hunters were greeted with bitter cold and high winds Saturday for opening day of Wisconsin’s gun-deer season. J.J. Slewinski, of Shawano, braved the weather near Hintz in Oconto County and got his buck Saturday morning. “If you were out in a field, it was pretty cold,” Slewinski said. “If you were in the woods, it was OK.” The cold weather may have had the deer hunkered down, lowering the number of deer taken opening weekend.
