After a sluggish start, the Bonduel High School girls basketball team pulled away from Suring in the fourth quarter to get a 58-41 win to open the season. The Bears fell behind 12-6 in the first quarter, but improved defense and a trio of 3s from Deanna Zernicke, a 5-foot-6 junior guard, helped lift Bonduel to a 18-18 tie at halftime. “We’ve been sitting back with 34 girls in practice playing nice,” Bonduel coach Missy Dowden.

Grosskopf Bus Company will be owned by Johnson Bus Company as of Jan. 1, the owners of both companies told the Shawano School Board on Monday. Scott Grosskopf broke the news on Nov. 11 that he planned to sell his company after more than 40 years of service to Shawano school children.

At least one seat on the Shawano County Board will be open when the spring election rolls around in April. District 5 Supervisor Sandy Steinke said she is not seeking re-election. Her district includes Wards 9 and 10 in the city of Shawano. “I have a new job, and with my new employer, my hours don’t coincide with County Board time,” she said.

Helen J. St. Louis, 82, of Lena (Kelly Lake), died Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Sharpe Care Nursing Home, Oconto Falls. She was born to the late William and Agnes (Vondross) Houska on Oct. 17, 1931. She married Robert St. Louis on June 14, 1952. Surviving are two sons, Wayne (Jean) St. Louis, and their children, Jennifer St. Louis, Jamie (Jarod) Weigelt and Landen; and Greg (Chris) St.

Jim Murphy, 56, Oconto Falls, died Saturday night, Nov. 30, 2013, of apparent cardiac arrest at a Green Bay hospital. He was born Sept. 5, 1957, in Oconto Falls to Howard and Gloria (Lewis) Murphy. Jim grew up in the town of Morgan where he attended Oconto Falls Public Schools, graduating from high school with the Class of 1975.

Robert Brown, Lakewood, has been named 2013 Oconto County Historical Society Volunteer of the Year for his work with the Holt and Balcom Logging Camp Museum.
