City looks to acquire parcel of former Lincoln School property

The Shawano Plan Commission on Wednesday recommended approval of an agreement for the city to acquire a portion of the former Lincoln School property adjacent to Main Street. Commonwealth Development Corp., of Fond du Lac, plans to construct 16 apartments in the former school building, plus an additional eight cottage units on the north side of the property. However, Commonwealth has decided it does not need the 9,251-square-foot lot that borders

Farm bill deal still elusive
A New Year’s deadline that could send the price of milk skyward looms over congressional negotiators as they try to reach agreement on a five-year farm bill. They’ve been tripped up by differences over the nation’s food stamp program and how to restructure farm subsidies. The two chambers have been far apart on both issues for more than two years.

Shawano opens swim season with win
Rolando Colon and Zach Soper won their individual events and the Shawano Community High School boys swim team opened the season Tuesday with a 105-65 win over Tomahawk in Shawano. Colon took first in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:14.79.

Hillcrest gets $25K Mielke grant
Hillcrest Primary School has received $25,000 from the Mielke Family Foundation that will go toward a multi-purpose “sensory integration” room for its young students. The foundation is a fierce advocate of early childhood education, said Troy Edwards, Hillcrest principal.

Family, friends mourn loss of Greenhill
Friends and colleagues are fondly remembering Shawano attorney Arnold Greenhill, who died Saturday at age 66, as a man of the people. Elsie Greenhill said her husband, who battled multiple myeloma (cancer of the bone marrow) for several years, loved Shawano. He was on the Shawano Area Community Foundation board and served 10 years on the board of trustees for Shawano Medical Center. “Shawano was very dear to his heart,“ she said.

Marjorie M. Sweda, 69, of the town of Underhill, Oconto County, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, with her loving husband by her side. Marjorie was born Jan. 21, 1944, in Mount Clemens, Mich., a daughter of the late Harold and Hazel (Socia) DeCaussin. She attended school in Mount Clemens.
