Shawano school superintendent resigns

Shawano School District Superintendent Todd Carlson has submitted his resignation, leaving the district’s top spot vacant just days before the new school year begins. Carlson sent an email to local media late Wednesday night, saying he is going to a nearby school district but not specifying where. The Shawano Leader received confirmation Thursday afternoon that the Gillett School District is interested in hiring Carlson as its superintendent.

Hawks golfers finish fifth The Shawano Community High School girls golf team came in fifth at a Bay Conference match Tuesday at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. Marinette (181) took first, followed by Denmark (199), Hortonville (205), West De Pere (209) and Shawano (216). Megan Beck led the Hawks with a 49, tying four other players for seventh overall.
Canadian claims victory at speedway
Canadian driver Ricky Weiss made his trip to Shawano Speedway a successful one by winning the Late Model feature Saturday. Matt Oreskovich won his second-straight IMCA Modified feature, while Brandon Czarapata won his 13th IMCA Stock Car feature of the year. Clint Forstner won his first IMCA Northern SportMod feature of the year.
Cats win 8-man debut
The new era of eight-man football couldn’t have started better for the Bowler/Gresham high school football team. The Cats scored on their very first play, with Zack Olson returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown en route to a 52-24 win over Oneida on Saturday. “This was a blast,” Bowler/Gresham coach Ralph Smith said. “I didn’t know what to expect coming into this. It was so exciting. I know the kids were excited.
Lucille “Cele” Stauber
Lucille “Cele” Stauber, 88, of Laona passed away peacefully on Aug. 25, 2013. Born in Laona on April 7, 1925, Lucille was the youngest child of Louis and Harriet (Hansen) Bocher. A graduate of Laona High School, member of the Class of 1943, Lucille married Norbert “Stub” Stauber on Sept. 30, 1943.
Mary K. Sawicki
Mary K. Sawicki, 60, of rural Tigerton, passed away Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident close to her home. The former Mary Kay McGraw was born on June 19, 1953, in Appleton to John and Cele (Steinhauer) McGraw. She was raised in the Leopolis area and graduated from Marion High School in 1972.
Hazel B. Kroll
Hazel B. Kroll, 91, of Medford, and formerly of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Aug. 25, 2013, at the Memorial Health and Rehabilitation Center in Medford. Hazel had been a resident there for the past two and a half years. Hazel was born Dec. 13, 1921, in the town of Hartland, Shawano County, the daughter of the late Melvin and Esther (Beyersdorf) Jensen.
Audrey A. Koukari
Audrey Alice (nee Malueg) Koukari, 79, of the town of Wescott, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and dear friends. Born on April 4, 1934, in Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Beatrice (McKay) Malueg. She grew up in Clintonville and graduated from Clintonville High School in 1952. On May 10, 1954, she was united in marriage to Raymond Koukari in Dubuque, Iowa.
Shirley Ann Juds
Shirley Ann Juds, 85, passed away on Aug. 15, 2013, at the Life Care Center of Sierra Vista, Ariz. Shirley Ann Martha Schulz was born on Aug. 27, 1927, in Milwaukee to Robert and Lillian (Tank) Schulz. She graduated from Rufus King High School on June 15, 1945. She was united in marriage to Howard Juds on June 21, 1947, at Gospel Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. She worked as a secretary at Spincraft and later as a cost clerk with Allis Chalmers.
Irma A. Feavel
Irma A. Feavel, 89, Oconto Falls, formerly of Shawano, died on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013. Irma was born on Dec. 6, 1923, in New London, daughter of the late Charles and Lena (Klitzke) Kroll. She was united in marriage to Russel Feavel; he preceded her in death in 1978. Irma loved watching birds and wildlife through the window. She was a member of the Foxy Ladies Red Hatters.
