Hawks suffer first Bay soccer loss

On a night of plenty of missed opportunities, perhaps the biggest came with 8 minutes and 42 seconds left in Tuesday’s Bay Conference soccer match between Shawano Community High School and Hortonville. Nathaniel Wilson’s shot got by Hortonville goalie Jacob Jennerjohn to tie the match 1-1, but the referee blew a whistle for obstruction before the play.

Sister school visit has far-reaching impact
People in Wisconsin pride themselves on extending a warm welcome to visitors, but that became a bit of a challenge on the path around the Falls earlier this week. The sister school delegation from Tomiura Junior High School arrived late Friday. On Sunday and Monday morning, Mother Nature blessed many local spots with a heavy layer of frost, so the personal warmth that is generated with the visit had to be turned up a notch.
Cheering unified the '57 Panthers
Our granddaughter Melanie, a seventh-grader, is a member of a national championship cheering team! But cheering today is nothing like it was back in my high school days. Back then, cheerleaders like Lorraine Kobs, Betty Magill and Sally Wusterbarth, members of the great Class of ’57, would actually lead cheers!
Oconto Falls welcomes new teachers
The Oconto Falls School District started the school year with 13 new staff members, one of the biggest incoming groups in several years. Joining the staff at Abrams Elementary was Kary Hayes, who will teach fourth grade.
Fun Fest takes on fall flavor
It has been 20 years since Karen Mihalski cleaned the closets and emptied the toy chest for a rummage sale. Now the next generation of the Mihalski family is ready to clear her home of outgrown clothes, little-used toys and a whole lot more. The mother/daughter team of Mihalski and Jenny Jurecki are first-time participants in Falls Fun Fest, famous for its rummage sales. Their sale will take place at Mihalski’s Krakow Road home in Morgan.
Adventure in the air at fly-in
Approximately 7,000 people attended the Oconto Fly-in sponsored by EAA Warbirds Badger Squadron 6 on Sept. 14. Fifty planes, including six Warbirds, flew into the airport. Russian Yaks, a Navy TBM Avenger, L-19 Bird Dog, Stearman and a Beech 18 were in the skies.
Benefit planned for Lena third-grader
A benefit for a Lena third-grader with leukemia will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Lena High School commons. Kyle Hodkiewicz, 8, son of Jessica and Mitch Hodkiewicz, was diagnosed with leukemia this summer. According to the family, Kyle is responding well to treatment but has a long journey ahead. Panthers blown out, remain winless The Oconto Falls High School football team lost 64-0 to Hortonville in a Bay Conference game Friday in Hortonville. Hortonville (5-0, 5-0 Bay) took a 29-0 lead in the first quarter and was up 36-0 by halftime. Tyler Kowalczyk had 120 yards on 21 carries for Oconto Falls (0-5, 0-4 Bay). Quarterback Samuel Konitzer was limited to one completion, on six attempts, for 30 yards.
