Dowden leads Bears to victory

Jennifer Dowden scored a career-best 32 points to lead the Bonduel High School girls basketball team to a 60-53 win over Iola-Scandinavia in a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 game Thursday in Iola. Felony possession of marijuana Criminal charges and an arrest warrant were issued Tuesday for an Appleton man who was allegedly keeping drugs in a safe at a Red Springs residence where he stays on weekends. Donald R. Benzel, 40, is charged with felony counts of second or subsequent offense possession of marijuana and second offense possession of a controlled substance.
Ruth B. Mielke
Ruth B. Mielke, 94, of Shawano, passed away Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2014, at Oakhaven of Shawano, where she had been a resident for several years. Funeral services for Ruth Mielke will be held on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. at Schroeder-Mickelson Funeral Service of Shawano. Relatives and friends may call after 2 p.m.
Edwin “Eddie” Schuh
Edwin “Eddie” Schuh, 87, of Tigerton, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at his home. Edwin Louis Schuh was born on April 2, 1926, in the town of Germania, Shawano County, to Frank and Meta (Wolter) Schuh. Right after graduating from Tigerton High School in 1944, he entered the U.S. Navy. Eddie served during World War II aboard the USS Bunker Hill aircraft carrier until 1946.
Harvey C. Bartz
Harvey C. Bartz, 84, of Shawano, passed away peacefully following a brief illness on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at the Shawano Medical Center with his family by his side. Harvey was born Nov. 23, 1929, in the town of Waukechon, a son of the late Gust and Martha (Wissmann) Bartz. Harvey attended Shawano High School, graduating in 1948.
WOW presents quilt show, talk
“The Art of the Quilter: III,” the fifth annual quilt show presented by the Walls of Wittenberg, opens Saturday in the WOWSpace, 114 Vinal St., Wittenberg. Quilters from Rhinelander to Cedarburg, Scandinavia to Stevens Point and many places in between are represented. The exhibition is free and open from 11 a.m.
School Notes
Hillcrest Primary School In Trisha Springborn’s class, we started January by reviewing the rules, then jumped right back into working on letters of the alphabet. We had fun making a jack in the box for the letter j, cutting and reviewing shapes. We made an alligator for the letter a and had to cut out the sharp teeth in a zig-zag pattern.
