Ruth B. Mielke, 94 of Shawano, passed away on Thursday morning, Jan. 23, 2014, at Oakhaven in Shawano, where she had been a resident for the past several years. Ruth was born May 20, 1919, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Fred and Anne (Kroenke) Wruck. Ruth attended St. James Lutheran Grade School and later graduated from Shawano High School. Following school she enlisted in the United States Navy, serving her country during World War II.

If this were the hot steamy days of July and August, I’d say we were in the dog days of summer, but what do I call the cold and snowy winter days of January? Whenever I am out and about, all I hear from people is how they long for spring. I agree, but how often have we had spring in January? So, why fuss and fret over the weather?

Dorothy Wagler walked into the Shawano Civic Center and asked the director, Joyce Natzke, if it would be possible to get help starting a quilting group. Wagler, who is deceased, had just retired from teaching. “She had never quilted and wanted to learn,” Natzke said. Craig and Amy Wildenberg, along with several other volunteers, run the Tilleda Thunder on Ice racing on Tilleda Pond. The Tilleda Thunder on Ice season starts the first Saturday in January and runs through the last Saturday in February, weather permitting. Racing starts at 1 p.m.
