After the unexpected death of her husband almost 12 years ago, Oconto resident Mary Grace Murphy began delving into the world of food preparation.

McMinnville, Tenn., resident and Gillett native Howard Sidney Hanson, 81, was born Feb. 8, 1932, and died Jan. 22, 2014, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., following a one-month illness. A retired serviceman with the United States Air Force, a veteran of Vietnam, and a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church, he was the son of the late Sidney Russell and Lucille Lillian Luebeck Hanson.

Anne Marie Banaszynski, 55, Phelps, died unexpectedly late Wednesday morning, Jan. 22, 2014, from massive heart failure and was received into God’s loving arms at St. Claire’s Hospital in Weston. She was born April 16, 1958, in Green Bay to Mildred and Theodore Sinclair. Anne grew up in the Pulaski area, where she attended Pulaski Public Schools.

With the deepest part of the deep-freeze winter settling on the path around the Falls this week, the construction season seems a long way off. Even so, there is evidence that some work continues, and plans for other work must be undergoing finalizing details. The most noticeable work, because of its massive scale, is along Highway 41 in Green Bay.

Gillett Elementary School will hold its 4-year-old kindergarten registration on Thursday, Feb. 13, and early childhood screenings on Friday, Feb. 14. During kindergarten registration/screening, children who will be of school age in the fall (4 years old by Sept. 1) are brought to school by their parents. While at school, the children will be involved in a number of activities at various stations.

Tigers lose on last-second shot The Gillett Secondary School boys basketball team lost 41-40 to Marinette and Oconto Conference foe Crivitz on a last-second, 3-point shot Thursday in Gillett. Jake Kasten led Gillett (4-9, 3-5 M&O) with 15 points. Dan Torres added 10. Colton Lange scored 13 points to lead Crivitz (10-3, 702 M&O).

The Oconto Falls High School wrestling team trailed 4-0 after the first match of Thursday’s meet against West De Pere in Oconto Falls. That wouldn’t last. Aided by five West De Pere forfeits, Oconto Falls went on to win 51-13. Oconto Falls recorded two pins: Dewey Krueger (152) over Tad Taggart in 4 minutes, 50 seconds, and Kyle Wolf (195) over Giovanni Lindley in 1:08. Also recording wins for the Panthers were Jacob Stoinski (126) 6-2 over Hunte

Before the Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team could even get its second shot off against Luxemburg-Casco on Friday, the Panthers were already down 15-0. That’s what kind of night it was for OFHS. Luxemburg-Casco hit over 50 percent of its shots, including 12 3-pointers, as Oconto Falls fell 78-43 at home in a Bay Conference game. “I challenged them after the game about playing with heart and pride,” Oconto Falls coach Kirk Hirst said.
