Leonard Louis Wasmund, 90, of Bonduel, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Shawano. Born on Oct. 4, 1923, in the town of Underhill, he was the son of the late Frederick E. and Laura (Schroeder) Wasmund. Leonard was a lifelong resident and farmer of the Bonduel area. He also worked for Equity Co-Op and was a member of the St. Paul Ev.

Cheryl L. Kohlin, 58, of Shawano, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2014, at the Shawano Medical Center, following a lengthy illness. Cheryl was born Nov. 22, 1955, in Shawano, a daughter of LeRoy “Skeeter” Beauprey and the late Gloria (Krause) Beauprey. She attended school in Lomira and was a graduate of Lomira High School. Following high school she was employed as a shift manager at Frigo Cheese in Lena for over 10 years.

Dorothy J. Bartelt, 85, of Gaylord, Mich., died March 9, 2014, at her home. She was born on Sept. 25, 1928, to Arnold and Nell (Meekma) Christensen in Racine. On Dec. 14, 1946, Dorothy married Lt. Col. Stanley E. Bartelt, who preceded her in death in 2005. A proud wife of an Air Force lieutenant colonel, Dorothy raised her three children.

Shawano Community High School junior Zach Soper, who won two WIAA Division 2 swim titles last month, earned Great Northern first-team honors in two events, and 13 other SCHS athletes earned conference awards for their play this winter sports season. Soper, who was named the Great Northern Conference’s Swimmer of the Year at the conference meet Feb.

Chris Kellett was the final coach to introduce his team and hand out awards at the Shawano Athletic Booster Club’s winter athletics banquet Monday at The Gathering in Shawano. The first-year boys basketball coach at Shawano Community High School had no problem adapting his season-long theme of family to the larger audience. “Being a part of Shawano basketball, it’s more than just basketball,” Kellett said.

The College of Menominee Nation recently was chosen to receive a $413,423 grant from NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project. CMN was one of four tribal colleges in the U.S.

A Shawano man who was reportedly stabbed by a woman in self-defense during a domestic disturbance in the city Saturday is facing a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of battery. Robert J. Peters, 46, was ordered held on a $500 cash bond Tuesday. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charges March 19. Police responding to a disturbance call about 3 a.m.
