Writer tries to bring life to cold case

John Mutter is a writer, and when something gets in his head, his only answer is to write about it.

That’s what he did with Sherry Sumnicht, a Bonduel woman who was murdered Oct. 15, 1975. No one has ever been brought to justice for her death.

Airboats take flight at Marion business

The Rogers family, which has owned and operated Great Lakes Veneer Inc. in Marion for more than a century, purchased an airboat manufacturer in Ontario, Canada, about a decade ago.

Walking for the homeless

Shawano County Board expected to adopt 2026 budget

Shawano County supervisors are expected to vote Oct. 22 on whether to approve a 2026 budget that will total $76.55 million.

The monthly board meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in the County Board Room at the Shawano County Courthouse.

For the first time in several years, the tax rate will see an increase. In 2026, it will change from $3.89 per $1,000 of assessed valuation to $3.98, an increase of 2.38%.

Davel leaving Shawano County sooner than planned

Shawano County Administrative Coordinator Jim Davel is leaving his post sooner than planned.

As of Nov. 3, Davel will be the new village administrator in Kronenwetter in Marathon County. He had earlier announced his retirement/resignation effective Jan. 5, 2026.

Council approves Shawano landfill agreement

The city of Shawano will continue to manage the Shawano Landfill and Transfer Station for at least a year after the Shawano Common Council voted Oct. 8 to approve the deal between the city and Shawano County.

The agreement has received approval from the Shawano County Solid Waste Management Board, but it still must receive approval from the Shawano County Board of Supervisors before becoming final.

Shawano chamber to celebrate 100 years

The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 100th anniversary at its annual banquet, set for Feb. 26, 2026.

Recognition of the 2025 Distinguished Citizen and Business of the Year award recipients is on the agenda.
