Commission sees work on recreation center

The Shawano Recreation Center is set to reopen in less than three months, and the Shawano Parks and Recreation Commission got a chance to see the latest work done in the facility during its May 20 meeting.

After nearly half a century in its current home, Elderon Memorial VFW Post 8068 is looking for a new location.

The clubhouse is approaching its 45th anniversary after previously serving many years as an insurance agency. While it has served the VFW well, it has become difficult to keep up the maintenance, accessibility requirements and updates that are required after decades of service.

Teachers speak out on board’s recent votes

The Shawano School Board is still feeling the heat from a recent vote in closed session to issue nonrenewal notices for contracts to three teachers, even though the board voted again on the matter in open session.

County gets no-strings-attached state grant

Local municipalities seldom get federal or state grants with no strings attached regarding how the money can be spent.

That is not the case with a $200,000 windfall from the Wisconsin Department of Administration. The same amount of money was given to each Wisconsin county with a Native American tribe in its boundaries.

Shawano County departments were asked to submit requests for the funds, and those totaled $385,000.
