Importance of local government stressed to students

Local. Local. Local.

That was the theme heard by area high school students who participated in the annual Youth Government Day program at the Shawano County Courthouse on Feb. 25.

Staci Rubenzer, director of the Shawano County Library, told more than 100 students of a former professor who instilled in her the importance of local government.

Motion to sanction attorneys for murder suspect withdrawn

The Shawano-Menominee County District Attorney’s office sought to sanction the two attorneys representing Michael Ingold in a first-degree homicide case for withholding documents, but officials quickly withdrew the motion once it was discovered the document in question was already in the DA’s possession.

Public invited to meetings regarding courthouse

Consultants unveiled an $88.5 million courthouse construction project for Shawano County supervisors Feb. 25.

An additional $32.5 million was proposed for a 150-bed housing pod for the jail, which would be used in conjunction with 108 beds at the current jail while closing the work release center on Engel Drive.

Genex building considered for public library use

A proposed $121 million building project for the Shawano County Courthouse and jail does not include funds for a new public library.

However, a new library remains a priority for the county, as the building at 127 S. Sawyer St. is short on space and has infrastructure issues.

Behnke pushes death penalty for child sex crimes

State Rep. Elijah Behnke is pushing a bill that could bring the death penalty back to Wisconsin after more than 170 years.
