Ice Bears open with 3 wins at tournament

The Bay Area Ice Bears girls hockey team went 3-0 in Baldwin over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The co-op team includes girls from Ashwaubenon, Bay Port, De Pere, Notre Dame, Green Bay Preble, Pulaski and West De Pere.

On Nov. 28, the Ice Bears opened play with an 8-2 win over the Western Wisconsin Stars.

Witt-Birn, Lena girls win again

Tuesday, Nov. 25

Wittenberg-Birnamwood coach Nick Mechelke was happy with the balanced scoring of his girls high school basketball team in the Chargers’ 69-29 rout over Wausau West.

The Chargers were easily in the lead 45-12 at the break and won the second half as well, 24-17.

Melaina Granquist led Wittenberg-Birnamwood with 22 points.

Shawano hockey team beats Rhinelander

With a large crowd on hand for Alumni Night, the Shawano/Bonduel boys hockey team treated everyone to a 7-2 win over Rhinelander on Nov. 25 at the Crawford Center.

Bonduel senior Gavin Hundt scored three goals and assisted on two others.

The Hawks led 3-0 after one period and 5-1 after two periods. They outshot the Hodags 25-15 in the contest.

Recurve-shot buck fulfills a 51-year dream

Legendary PBS painter Bob Ross never made a mistake while painting during his long-running “The Joy of Painting” show. He only had “happy accidents.”

A 5-point buck finally fell to my recurve bow, and it was a combination of 51 years of patience and a happy accident.

Oconto Falls, Lena boys win season openers

The 2025-26 boys basketball season kicked off Nov. 25, and Oconto Falls opened its season with a 76-65 win over Menominee Nation.

Senior Brady Bursa led the Panthers with 25 points. Senior Jameson Beaman added 22, and junior J.J. Pytleski chipped in another 16.

Pytleski led his teammates with seven rebounds. Bursa and freshman Teagan Tate each had five assists, and Bursa also had four steals.

Opening weekend deer harvest tops 90,000

Hunters registered 90,671 deer statewide during the opening weekend of the 2025 gun deer hunt, compared to 87,248 registered for the same period in 2024, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This is a 3.9% increase from a year ago and 1.1% below the 5-year average.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 55, Green Bay Preble 40

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s girls basketball team got off to a slow start but battled back to defeat Green Bay Preble 55-40.

The Chargers trailed 21-19 at the half but outscored the Hornets 36-19 in the second half.
