Unemployment in Shawano County ticked up slightly in November from the previous month, according to the latest figures from the state Department of Workforce Development (DWD). Shawano County’s unemployment rate was 6.5 percent in November compared to 6.2 percent in October.

After a brief respite this weekend from chilling temperatures that have lingered for most of the month, another dangerous cold snap is expected to settle in starting Sunday night. “We would advise people to be careful out on the roads,” Shawano Police Capt.

Kandi Krueger has compassion for the children she sees at the Safe Haven Domestic Abuse Support Center in Shawano. “I love working with children,” said Krueger, the center’s children’s advocate.

Paul and Jane Krause help at the Shawano Area Food Pantry and Resource Center and at their church, Hope Community, whenever they can. Paul is from Howard in Brown County and graduated from Pulaski High School. He worked in manufacturing for eight years, then was a meter reader for 34 years for Wisconsin Public Service. He retired in 2003. Jane is from Green Bay, graduating from Green Bay West High School.

In a reflective mood with the New Year coming to a close, I realize I’ve become more nostalgic, recalling the past and enjoying the memories as I age. I like to stay home more and find deep contentment in that. My family and extended family are close to my heart and treasured. I love them with a fierceness that cannot be put into words.

This has been a December to remember as far as weather is concerned. We have had more than the normal amount of snow and certainly more than our share of cold. Joseph A. Warrington, 79, of Keshena, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on Aug. 23, 1934, in Keshena, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Boivin) Warrington Sr. After graduating from high school, Joseph enlisted with the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1962, after more than nine years of service. On Nov.

Delores M. Meverden, 79, of the town of Wescott, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 7, 1934, in Shawano, she was the daughter of the late Otto F. and Hulda (Bohm) Lohrengel. Delores lived her entire life in the Shawano area, where she worked at Mehlberg’s Bakery, A&P Grocery Store and Ace Farm & Home. On Nov. 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to Jerome Meverden in Shawano.

David H. Klatt, 77, of Cecil, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital with his family at his side. David was born on Feb. 2, 1936, in Milwaukee. He was the son of the late Ralph and Anita Hale Klatt. In 1959, David moved to California, where he met and married Alice Hibbard on Dec. 1, 1962, in Riverside, Calif.
