Area high school athletes won 18 championships at WIAA track and field regionals Tuesday. Gresham/Bowler’s Drew Payne won the triple jump and the 100 dash at the Division 3 regional in Rosholt. He also took second in the long jump. Teammates Austin Olsen (300 hurdles), Cody Montez (3,200 run) and Andrew Pleshek (high jump) also won events. Menominee Indian’s Ania Smith won the discus and shot put at the Division 3 regional in Suring.

Hawks fall to Notre Dame rally The No. 3-seeded Shawano Community High School softball team lost a lead late against No. 2 Green Bay Notre Dame, losing the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal 4-3 Tuesday at Riverview Park in Green Bay. The Hawks (8-14, 6-9 Bay) led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, but Notre Dame (7-9, 5-9 Fox River Classic) scored a run on a Shawano error.

Hawks improve to 2-0 in tourney The Shawano Community High School girls soccer team beat New London 2-1 on the road Tuesday to improve to 2-0 in the Bay Conference tournament. The Hawks (12-6, 8-2 Bay) took the lead on a Louisa Keenan goal 30 minutes into the match. Sarah Dickmann had the assist.

St. Paul Lutheran School, Bonduel St. Paul parent Jamie Wege last week showed students and teachers photos and artifacts from her recent mission trip to Uganda in Africa. Students enjoyed seeing photos and hearing stories of similarities and differences in culture and religion. Preschool and kindergarten students gave a “Little Christians Sing Praise” program for parents, grandparents and members of the congregation.

Corey F. Krueger, 46, of Shawano, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home on Monday afternoon, May 26, 2014, after suffering an apparent heart attack. Corey was born Oct. 25, 1967, in Shawano, a son of Fred and Sue (Corey) Krueger. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Elementary School and later graduated from Shawano High School with the Class of 1986.

Charles Dean Huehnerfuss, 79, of Shawano, left this world to join our beloved family in Heaven on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, in Green Bay. Charles was born Oct. 16, 1934, in Wausau to the loving parents Emil and Goldie Huehnerfuss. Charles attended school in Birnamwood and Wausau. Following school, he entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1955-57 in Texas. He then attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
