Capt. Tom Tuma dropped his bid Tuesday for the Shawano County Sheriff Department’s top job, saying that a prolonged campaign for sheriff would not be financially sustainable. Tuma was one of three candidates vying for the Republican nomination for sheriff in the Aug. 12 primary, along with incumbent Randy Wright and Officer Adam Bieber of the Shawano Police Department. The winner will face Independent challenger Lucas Christenson in the Nov.

There is electricity available for evening activities and anything involving a sound system. “This gazebo project was chosen by the Shawano Rotary to showcase the beautiful Wolf River,” said Rhonda Strebel, club president and city alderwoman.

Gresham defeats Port Edwards The third-seeded Gresham Community High School baseball team beat No. 6 Port Edwards 11-7 to open the WIAA Division 4 regional tournament Tuesday in Gresham. “We had too many errors early in the game, but we fought back,” Gresham coach Troy Kuhn said. The Wildcats (9-11, 8-10 Central Wisconsin Conference-10) took the lead in the fourth inning when Scott Cerveny drew a bases-loaded walk.

Western Division Bowler 9, Caroline 3 Bowler scored six runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 3-2 deficit. Paul Murphy earned the win while Travis Verg took the loss. Bowler’s Paul Murphy was 4 for 6 with two doubles, a triple and two RBIs. Phil Duffek had three hits, including two doubles. Andy Pierzchalski was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Bonduel High School golfer Ben Shoup shot an 84 to finish 14th Tuesday at the WIAA Division 2 sectional at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. “After a pretty rough first couple of holes, Ben recovered and fought hard for the rest of the round,” coach Dan Anderson said.

The Shawano Community High School baseball team came up short Tuesday in its effort to replicate last year’s WIAA regional win over Pulaski. Like last year, the 10th-seeded Hawks were on the road at Memorial Park to face No. 7 Pulaski in a Division 1 regional semifinal.

Supporters of a proposed casino in Kenosha say they are moving ahead with their plans for the $810 million, multi-phase project while they wait for approval from Gov. Scott Walker. The first phase of construction would include more than 400,000 square feet and feature an entertainment venue and retail space.

It took 17 years for a team from Shawano School District to return to the Destination Imagination Global Finals.
