Nonprofit Profile

Some of the men on the Senior Softball Team in Shawano have been playing since 2001. “It seems like it was yesterday,” said Don Meyer, one of the original organizers. Bill Schmidt, who now lives in Green Bay, started the team in Shawano after he played in Arizona. Other original players still participating are Bob Kurkiewicz, Don Raddant and Henry Schultz. After putting an article in the paper, six guys showed up for the first practice.

Bear gets borne out of town
He was fast becoming a local celebrity over the course of his three-day visit, but by Friday he had apparently overstayed his welcome. The yearling bear that had been alternately raiding bird feeders and getting chased into trees to have his picture taken since his arrival in Shawano on Wednesday morning was forcibly evicted by authorities shortly after 1 p.m.

Deer crash danger increases in June
It’s that time of year again when motorists need to be aware of increased chances of running into deer on the roadways. Shawano County is one of the places in Wisconsin where that is most likely to happen, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Law enforcement agencies reported 18,313 deer vs. motor vehicle crashes in the state last year. Waukesha County had the most motor vehicle vs. deer crashes in 2013 with 809.

Hudson Hornet stings again
Week 3 of racing at the historic half mile Shawano Speedway turned out to be a night to remember for hometown hot shoe Cody Hudson. The popular driver known as “The Hudson Hornet” is a rookie this season in the IMCA Modified division after winning the track championship a season ago in the IMCA Sport Mod class. I’ve told his story before in these pages, but it is worth retelling.

Small but proud
The 17 graduating Gresham High School students only numbered 16 until the very end of the ceremony. As diplomas were being awarded in the school gym Friday, Austin Olsen quickly changed into his gown and brought up the rear, joining the graduates after competing in a WIAA sectional track meet. Principal Keary Mattson described the class as very helpful, doing things such as shoveling snow and mopping hallways.

Smurawa statebound after setting school record
The Smurawas will remember it as a perfect day. Shawano Community High School senior Kia Smurawa jumped a school record 17 feet, 9 inches in the long jump at the WIAA Division 1 sectional Friday at St. Norbert College’s Schneider Stadium in De Pere, qualifying for the WIAA State Championships next week. “I’m so excited,” Kia Smurawa said.

Going out the Hawk way
Shawano School District Superintendent Gary Cumberland challenged the Class of 2014 to forge ahead, stressing the real work has yet to begin, at the Shawano Community High School commencement Friday. “Graduation is not the end, it is the beginning,” Cumberland said.

School Board approves August referendum questions
The Oconto Falls School Board on Wednesday finalized a two-question referendum proposal seeking funding for a variety of projects. Voters in the district will decide Aug. 12 whether to support a $2.2 million proposal to build a football stadium and track at Oconto Falls High School, re-do parking lots at district buildings and renovate the parking lot entrance at Abrams Elementary School.

Panthers advance behind Larsen’s complete game
Senior McKenna Larsen’s return to the Oconto Falls High School softball team could not have come at a better time. The pitcher missed the regular season after sustaining a torn ligament in her right hand during the basketball season, and picked up where she left off entering the Panthers' postseason. With Larsen in a groove for her third postseason game, the fifth-seeded Panthers pieced together another complete game to beat No.

Detective offices named after supervisor
The Shawano County Board voted unanimously Wednesday to name the newly renovated detective offices in the county courthouse after Supervisor Arlyn Tober, who was first elected to the board in 1974. Tober said the honor took him completely by surprise. “Usually these honors don’t come until you’re dead,” he said. Tober has represented the town of Pella on the County Board since 1974, the last 12 as board vice chairman.
