Thanks in part to a no-hitter by junior Riley Gruetzmacher, the Oconto Falls High School baseball team Saturday split a doubleheader with Shawano at Memorial Field in Oconto Falls. The right-handed Gruetzmacher pitched all seven innings of the second game and led Oconto Falls (2-5, 1-5 Bay) to a 2-0 win. He struck out 11 batters and allowed only two walks. “He did really well,” Oconto Falls coach Charlie Rochon said.

Dave Collins recently took some time to add up how many all-conference meetings he’s attended over the years – the total exceeded 400. That may not be surprising since Collins, 72, has been the face of the Marinette & Oconto Conference as the commissioner for the past 37 years.

At 3:50 p.m. April 20 in Little Suamico, a male driver from Pound traveling north on U.S. Highway 41/141 near Brown Road was cut off and hit by an unknown driver who fled the scene. The Pound man’s vehicle entered the ditch and hit a fence. It sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene.

Two storms last year negatively impacted the Maple Valley Mutual Insurance Company, President Al Schuettpelz told policyholders at the company’s annual meeting March 25. The Gillett School District will request bids for contracted food service to determine if the district can benefit financially by outsourcing its meals. Superintendent Todd Carlson said the district’s food service program has been in the red the last couple of years, and a contracted service could reverse that trend.

Oconto County officials closed the Machickanee Forest Shooting Range on Friday, the morning after neighbors again reported rapid fire at the range and bullets landing in their yards.
