Stadelman receives USDA award
Shawano resident Rick Stadelman, executive director of the Wisconsin Towns Association, last week was presented with the 2014 USDA Rural Development State Director Award at the Wisconsin Rural Partners Rural Summit in Stevens Point. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership and dedication in the service of rural communities. School Notes
Olga Brener Intermediate School Lynn Trochil, a fourth-grade teacher at Olga Brener, implemented the use of TenMarks in her classroom. TenMarks is a virtual teacher’s aid based on the Common Core State Standards, making the CCSS both accessible and engaging while improving student success. Her students participated in a six-week math competition called Math Madness.

Shawano 6, Hortonville 4> The Shawano Lobos opened Dairyland League play with a 6-4 win over the Hortonville Stars on Sunday in Shawano. Lucas Postl hit a two-RBI single in the seventh to break the 4-4 tie. Eric Stenson earned the win, pitching seven innings in relief of Will Kuchelmeister. Stenson struck out nine, walked one, and gave up six hits and no runs.

East-West Division Marion 11, Shawano 1 Cody Reimer earned the win and was 3-for-4 at the plate for Marion. Dave Jueds was also 3-for-4. Shawano’s Ben Schiedermayer took the loss. Branden Estep was 2-for-4, and Bobby Bunker had a double. Gresham 9, Neopit 7 Mitch Pleshak earned the win for Gresham, while Wil Corn took the loss. Gresham’s Tom Williams was 2-for-4 with a double.

Hawks beaten by New London The Shawano Community High School baseball team lost 5-4 to New London in a Bay Conference game Tuesday in New London. Taylor Prey took the loss for the Hawks (3-6, 3-5 Bay). Ky Schmidt went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Hawks split doubleheader in Oconto Falls
The Shawano Community High School baseball team’s batting slump continued, but pitching and defense were enough to split a doubleheader with Oconto Falls on Saturday in Oconto Falls. Senior Taylor Prey had a first-inning RBI single in a 1-0 Shawano victory to start the day, but Oconto Falls answered with a 2-0 win in the second game as the Hawks went without a hit. Bonduel downs Falcons, 6-4
Bonduel High School softball coach Chris Reinke wasn’t comfortable with a 5-1 lead in the second inning of Monday’s Central Wisconsin Conference-8 game against Amherst, but it proved to be enough. The Bears, who only gave up three runs the rest of the way, held on for the 6-4 win. “At the beginning, I wasn’t sure if the bats were going to come around,” Reinke said. “I was concerned, two runs was not enough.

Hawks' rough start leads to loss
Falling behind 7-2 in the first two innings, the Shawano Community High School softball team went on to lose 9-3 Tuesday to Bay Conference foe West De Pere at Martzke Sports Park in Shawano. Shawano (5-7, 4-4 Bay) gave up five runs to start the game. After the Hawks trimmed the lead to 5-2, West De Pere (9-3, 8-1) scored again in the top of the second. “The first five batters scored,” Shawano coach Kevin Isaacson said.
