The Shawano School Board will hold public meetings about the school district’s proposed 2014-15 budget on July 15, 16 and 31. “We want to be as open and as transparent as possible,” Superintendent Gary Cumberland said. Board members discussed the budget sessions Monday. “There will be three opportunities here in July for community input,” Michael Sleeper said.

The community open swim and open weight room programs at Shawano Community High School will end this summer. Administrators told the School Board on Monday that the costs of providing access to the facilities far exceeded the revenue they generated. “The cost differential between what we provide and what has been brought in is drastic,” Superintendent Gary Cumberland said. The Box in the Wood Theatre Guild will bring a number of Dr. Seuss tales to life this week at the Mielke Arts Center, N5649 Airport Road, Shawano. The show starts its two-week run Friday night. There will be red fish and blue fish, Horton the elephant, the Cat in the Hat, Mayzie LaBird and a plethora of Whos singing and dancing across the stage.

Steven A. Steinbach Sr., 62, of Shawano, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, July 6, 2014, at Aurora Bay Care Medical Center in Green Bay, with his loving family by his side. Steve was born on May 27, 1952, in Antigo, a son of the late Chester and Marilyn (Goodwill) Steinbach. As a young child, his family moved to Hartford, where Steve attended school, graduating from Hartford High School in 1970.

Trumen R. Thorson, 90, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 7, 2014, at the Shawano Medical Center. Trumen was born on Oct. 15, 1923, a son of the late Thomas and Rena (Knoff) Thorson. Trumen attended the Riverside Grade School in Lunds. He was confirmed at Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Lunds in 1938.

To the editor: As they say, it only takes one bad apple to spoil it for everyone else. I am contacting you regarding the ATV trail that starts in Krakow and goes up to and beyond Townsend. I now know why folks are reluctant to allow these trails to be open. From some of the riders, there is no respect for property owners along the trail. I was working in my yard around 6 p.m. June 18 when all of a sudden I heard an ATV pull into my yard.
