The Oconto Falls High School cheer competition team placed third in nonstunt and fourth in cheer dance at the Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches state competition Feb. 28 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The team of nine girls advanced to state after placing first in cheer dance and second in nonstunt at the regional competition Feb. 15 at Waupaca High School.

Oconto Electric Cooperative employees raised $10,000 for three local schools. Co-op representatives in January presented $5,000 to Lena High School and $2,500 each to Gillett and Coleman high schools, to be used for the schools’ tech ed departments. Since 2004, OEC employees have chosen a charity to support each year. For the 2014 award, local schools could apply for funding for their tech ed departments.

Coach Jeff Heimke knew it would be tough for his Lena High School boys basketball team to defeat 2014 state runner-up Green Bay NEW Lutheran. Playing without one of its leading scorers made it more difficult, and Lena lost 83-54 Friday in a WIAA Division 5 regional game.
