Alice M. (Jewell) Hansen, 95, of Gillett, died on Monday, March 9, 2015. She was born on March 26, 1919, to Robert and Bernice (Scutt) Jewell in Gillett. On Dec. 24, 1937, Alice married the late Elmer Hansen. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1947. Alice was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church and Northern Gardeners Club in Gillett. She worked as a leather cutter at the former Northern Shoe Company in Pulaski for many years.

Lucille Blahnik, 88, of Spruce, passed away Friday evening, March 6, 2015, at her home. Born to Everett and Elna Piper, she was a lifelong member of St. Mark Ev. Lutheran Church of Spruce. Lucille was a graduate of Oconto Falls High School, Class of 1944, and attended Northeast Wisconsin Technical College prior to employment with Wisconsin Public Service in Green Bay. Lucille was united in marriage with Milton J. Blahnik in 1947.

To the editor: The 2015 budget bill has a sweeping change for the state. The assessment process would be handled by the county. There would not be a local assessor or local board of review. It would be replaced by an assessment administrator hired by the county. The assessments would be at a 100 percent level of assessment each year.

In 1883, the French author Guy de Maupassant wrote a short story called “The Piece of String.” The story tells how, by a single, innocent act (picking up a piece of string), a person’s life and reputation could be forever altered. This is not such a sardonic story. Not too long ago, I was looking for a piece of string to tie up some bundles of cardboard to put in the recycling, and I couldn’t find any in the garage.
