Community Action for Healthy Living (CAHL) conducted Wisconsin Wins tobacco compliance checks throughout the month of June across 10 counties in northeast Wisconsin, including Shawano and Oconto. These investigations are part of an ongoing effort to prevent the illegal sale of tobacco and nicotine products to minors.

It took a little longer than expected, but the 2025-27 biennial Wisconsin budget is now settled — making some folks happy but disappointing others. The $111 billion state budget was officially signed into law in the early hours of July 3 by Gov. Tony Evers following a marathon session by the Wisconsin Assembly the day before to reapprove the budget by a 59-39 vote after changes were made in the Wisconsin Senate.

• Tiffany R. Polzin, 42, Peshtigo, pleaded guilty July 2 to a misdemeanor charge of retail theft. A felony bail jumping charge was dismissed in a plea agreement. Judge Jay Conley levied a fine, ordered restitution and sentenced her to 90 days time served in the county jail. • Arianah Rose Dawson, 18, Pulaski, was charged June 30 with possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

July 2 Deputies responded to 51 incidents, including a noise disturbance at Zippel Park, 150 N. McKenzie St.

• Michael A. Winters, 47, Pulaski, pleaded no contest Feb. 20 to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Judge Katherine Sloma sentenced him June 27 to five years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision with conditions. • Brian S. Pamonicutt, 31, Gresham, pleaded no contest Jan. 16 to first-degree child sex assault.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department July 6 Deputies responded to 40 incidents, including suspicious activity on Moh He Con Nuck Road in Bowler; suspicious activity on Green Meadow Road in the Town of Almon; disorderly conduct on Wege Road in the Town of Almon; disorderly conduct on Cloverleaf Lake Road in the Town of Belle Plaine; criminal damage on Comet Road in the Town of Germania; harassment on North Ellms Street in Wittenberg; four 911 calls

July 6 Waupaca 2, Cecil 0 Cecil held the Dairyland League-leading Lakemen to two runs and four hits but couldn’t come up with any of their own. Winning pitcher Cam Seidl allowed two hits and struck out nine batters, while Tucker Bouche took the loss for Mudhens. Luke Behm had three of Waupaca’s four hits.

A Menominee tribal member who has dedicated more than 50 years of his life to the sport of boxing was among those inducted into the North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame. On June 7, former boxer, referee and coach Orin “Lou” Askenette was among 54 Indigenous athletes honored as the 2025 NAIA Hall of Fame inductees at a ceremony at the Oneida Hotel and Conference Center in Green Bay.
