CLUB NOTES: Shawano Area Writers

The Shawano Area Writers meeting was held Aug. 18 in the Elsie Engel Room in the Shawano Public Library. Minutes and the treasurer’s report were approved. In new business, Terry Misfeldt announced he has started writing a column in his hometown newspaper in Thorp, entitled “Adult Growing Up Memories.” John Mutter presented his finished book “The Oddball” about George Putz Jr.
AROUND THE COMMUNITY: Art show looks at life from photographer’s view
The Walls of Wittenberg Art Gallery is hosting its first photography-only art show, Life Through the Lens. Life Through the Lens highlights five invited hobbyist photographers for a juried art show opening Sept. 17. The invited photographers for this year’s show are Brian P.
CLUB NOTES: Suring Area Historical Society
The Suring Area Historical Society held its July 19 meeting at the Suring Museum. The meeting was called to order by interim President Shannon Stoner at 6:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all 24 members and guests present. The secretary and treasurer reports were approved. Balance in the account is $72,230.41.
AROUND THE COMMUNITY: Made for Mission helps out SAM25
Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and School held its Made for Mission program Aug. 15-16. The opportunity focused on service in little ways for middle schoolers around the Shawano community. One exciting component was that two young adults who led this year’s program, Sami Boehm and Nick Klicka, were also a part of the Diocese of Green Bay’s program called Love Begins Here in 2021 at Sacred Heart.
Cardinals featured in new barn quilt
Shawano County’s 393rd barn quilt is now on display on a barn owned by Curt and Loretta Waegli at W9985 County Road A northwest of Shawano. The pattern they selected features five cardinals and is called “Our Red-feathered Friends.” “I just love cardinals,” Loretta Waegli said, “so this pattern is perfect for us.
Cemetery Walk portrayals announced
The Oconto County Historical Society is sponsoring its 12th annual Cemetery Walk “If Tombstones Could Talk” on Sept. 12-14. The first two evenings will find the walk being staged outdoors at the Oconto Catholic Cemetery, 3024 N. River Road, Oconto. On the evening of Sept. 14, the program will be presented in the John B. LeMay Auditorium at Oconto Senior High School, 1717 Superior Ave., Oconto.
Mutter details book about lifelong friend
One local writer payed homage to a friend with a book written about their life. John J. Mutter Jr. recently completed a book, titled “The Oddball,” detailing the life and personality of Shawano resident George Putz Jr. Putz passed away in 2006. “In 1966, I got a job at the Shawano Paper Mill,” said Mutter. “I got to meet George Putz there. After I retired in 2001, I got together with George again.
