Season is about more than gifts

This has been a December to remember as far as weather is concerned. We have had more than the normal amount of snow and certainly more than our share of cold. New Year’s Eve is predicted to be below zero, so 2014 seems to be coming in with a bang also. Many people go south for the winter. However, this year winter weather has landed in unexpected places.
Joseph A. Warrington
Joseph A. Warrington, 79, of Keshena, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at a local nursing home. Born on Aug. 23, 1934, in Keshena, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary (Boivin) Warrington Sr. After graduating from high school, Joseph enlisted with the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1962, after more than nine years of service. On Nov.
Delores M. Meverden
Delores M. Meverden, 79, of the town of Wescott, passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 7, 1934, in Shawano, she was the daughter of the late Otto F. and Hulda (Bohm) Lohrengel. Delores lived her entire life in the Shawano area, where she worked at Mehlberg’s Bakery, A&P Grocery Store and Ace Farm & Home. On Nov. 29, 1952, she was united in marriage to Jerome Meverden in Shawano.
David H. Klatt
David H. Klatt, 77, of Cecil, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital with his family at his side. David was born on Feb. 2, 1936, in Milwaukee. He was the son of the late Ralph and Anita Hale Klatt. In 1959, David moved to California, where he met and married Alice Hibbard on Dec. 1, 1962, in Riverside, Calif.
Margaret Sousek
Margaret Sousek, nee Richards, previously of Gresham, passed away on Dec. 25, 2013. She was born on April 11, 1916, the youngest daughter of George and Theresa (Schmidt) Richards, and grew up on the family farm. On June 6, 1934, she married Victor and they began married life in Leopolis, where Victor worked in the bank while Margaret cared for the family and also provided room and board to local teachers to supplement the family income.
Opal M. Lohmiller
Opal M. Lohmiller, 84, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, Dec. 26, 2013, at the Appleton Medical Center, where she had been a patient for the past 12 days. Opal was born on Oct. 3, 1929, in Shawano, a daughter of the late Robert and Ella (Huebner) Krueger. She attended St. James Lutheran Grade School and later Shawano High School, graduating from Shawano High in 1946.
Roger D. Erdmann
Roger D. Erdmann, 73, of Shawano, passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, in Appleton. Born on July 21, 1940, in Milwaukee, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Evelyn (Mueller) Erdmann. On May 11, 1974, in Berlin, Roger was united in marriage to Dorothy Rutkauskas. Roger had a passion for nature and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, back-packing, hunting and boating.
Alfred L. Siolka
Alfred L. Siolka, 85, of Bonduel, passed away on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at the St. Casimir Catholic Church in Krakow. Visitation will be held at the Swedberg-Wendt Funeral Home in Bonduel on Monday from 4-8 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Jolene R. Bowan
Jolene R. Bowan, 52, of Shawano, passed away Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at her home surrounded by family and friends. Born on Oct. 26, 1961, in Shawano, she was the daughter of Dorothy (Zimmerman) Bowan and the late Allen L. Bowan. Jolene lived in Shawano her entire life. She worked as a nurse and established the Bowan Adult Family Home. When not at work, she enjoyed landscaping and collecting angels.
SMU's turnover of Internet, cable to Cellcom under way
The turnover of Shawano Municipal Utilities’ cable and high-speed Internet services to Cellcom is on track to be completed by Feb.
