NWTC awarded $1.3 million Trio grant

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has been awarded a $1.3 million federal Trio Student Support Services (SSS) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to expand academic support and increase college completion for first-generation, low-income students and students with disabilities.

Closing day nears for War Bonnet in Shawano

Man gets prison for breaking girlfriend’s nose

A Menominee man was sentenced this week to 3½ years in prison in connection with breaking his girlfriend’s nose with a punch to her face.

Last February, Darryl D. Smith, 53, was staying at the Eagle’s Nest, an emergency shelter operated by the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, with Candace Escalante with whom he shared a child, according to court documents.

Gun deer harvest down slightly from 2024 numbers

The 2025 gun deer season is over, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said preliminary figures indicate the number of deer hunters in Wisconsin slightly decreased compared to 2024.

Home, businesses struck by vehicles

A motorist apparently over-corrected and crashed into the Dairy Queen restaurant at 1005 E. Green Bay St. on Nov. 22. It was the latest in a string of vehicles crashing into buildings in the city of Shawano.

Just four days earlier, on Nov. 18, a car crashed into a house at 206 S. Lincoln St., knocking it nearly 5 inches off its foundation.

Drivers warned not to take videos while driving

Bonduel Fire Chief Kevin Lynch doesn’t like it when people use their phones while driving — and he really doesn’t like it when they record a live accident scene when they’re behind the wheel.

Lynch followed up on a Facebook post of a Nov. 26 accident with some strong words for the driver.
