Recurve-shot buck fulfills a 51-year dream

Legendary PBS painter Bob Ross never made a mistake while painting during his long-running “The Joy of Painting” show. He only had “happy accidents.”

A 5-point buck finally fell to my recurve bow, and it was a combination of 51 years of patience and a happy accident.

Oconto Falls, Lena boys win season openers

The 2025-26 boys basketball season kicked off Nov. 25, and Oconto Falls opened its season with a 76-65 win over Menominee Nation.

Senior Brady Bursa led the Panthers with 25 points. Senior Jameson Beaman added 22, and junior J.J. Pytleski chipped in another 16.

Pytleski led his teammates with seven rebounds. Bursa and freshman Teagan Tate each had five assists, and Bursa also had four steals.

Opening weekend deer harvest tops 90,000

Hunters registered 90,671 deer statewide during the opening weekend of the 2025 gun deer hunt, compared to 87,248 registered for the same period in 2024, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This is a 3.9% increase from a year ago and 1.1% below the 5-year average.

Charger girls win third in a row

Wittenberg-Birnamwood 55, Green Bay Preble 40

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s girls basketball team got off to a slow start but battled back to defeat Green Bay Preble 55-40.

The Chargers trailed 21-19 at the half but outscored the Hornets 36-19 in the second half.

Lena’s Thomson hits 1,000 points

Lena 60, Gresham 13

Lena High School senior Madi Thomson reached 1,000 career points in Lena’s 60-13 home victory over Gresham.

Thomson led Lena with 23 points and ended the game with exactly 1,000 points.

Allie Cerveny led Gresham with five points.

Lena led 37-7 at the half in the runaway game and outscored their guests 23-6 after the break.

Gillett, Pulaski girls basketball teams earn wins

Gillett blew the game open early and never looked back in its season opener, defeating Green Bay NEW Lutheran 44-23 on Nov. 21.

Pulaski 62, Oshkosh North 50

The Red Raiders earned their first win of the season, a 62-50 victory over Oshkosh North.

Pulaski is now 1-2 overall.
